I've heard Ruger American's are pretty good, if you like that sort of thing... I hope you find a nice pre 64 model 70 one of these days. There out there. I've heard there are tons of them in Alaska since it is the state rifle there.. Good luck in your search..

Sorry, Fellas. I was really hoping I could get a little more info from the dealer. If anybody has any ideas about how to sleuth it further, I'm all ears.

I wouldn't be too hasty to say that Westerner has been re-finished.
I've got a brother to that one with pretty much the same type of finish.
Like yours it's seen very little use. Pictures up soon so we can compare.

POPGUN, I'd love to take a look at some pics of yours.

At work now but I'll try and get some posted before the weekend.
I'll put it along side a 338 Alaskan which I suspect has been refinished.
Also the serial number so we can see how far apart they are in build dates.
Mine has the stainless barrel.

Here is my 1958 Alaskan in 338. Just picked it up on Thursday, it came with a Bushnell Scope Chief and will soon be wearing a Leupold, thinking 2.5 - 8 x 36 but may go 3-9 x 40 depending on how they fit and look.

Very cool 338 Alaskan Razz. Let us know when you refinish it if you decide to got that route. Everyone needs a good Alaskan along with a 30-06 and maybe a 375 H&H laugh cool

Razz, I'm running a 3.5-10x40 VX-III on my M70FW now - it fits well and looks well on the rifle.

Found a pic of my other pre 64, 1959 vintage 30-06 that is on permanent loan to my son. He said I am welcome to shoot it anytime I come visit up in Wyoming. Oh, and I am welcome to send up more reloads anytime!
He loaned it to his roommate and sent me a picture, sorry there is an elk crowding up the photo! Can you tell by the smile it is his buddies first elk?

Here's my recently-purchased 7X57mm Cabela's M70 Supergrade lightweight. I rather like it. After getting it on paper, I zeroed with 140 grain Hornady factory. I'll try some other stuff next week. So far, so good.

I put a 3-9X Meopta on in low steel Talleys. I was going to change to a 4X later, but I may leave it on. Big, but a nice scope.

Nice, dark wood. Nothing exceptional, but even-colored and figured on both sides. I'm happy.

Bob, that is a sweet looking package. It really came together with those talley steels and meopta. Looks like it's going to be a excellent shooter too. You have great taste in rifles buddy..

Bob...glad you posted a picture of that beauty. You did really well based on what you told me in your PM. Looks like it shoots as well as it looks!

Thanks! I owe you for the heads-up. I'm really liking this rifle...and I'm left-handed. I wouldn't feel too sorry for myself if this was my only centerfire.
