Just back from hunting with this one, pre 64 (1955) in 280, Edge compact stock, fwt bottom metal, talleys and leupold 3.5x10. Shoots 139 hornady flat base into .8 (3 shots). Weighs 7lb 1 ounce empty, without sling. Pretty nice hunting rig, for me at least. Also have a pre 64 fwt in 30-06 in the original stock, it stayed home this time!

Very nice, doesn't get much better than that.....

Isn't there a Federal Statute somewhere about hoarding?

Not refinished, well maintained and not used much. It would be near mint if it were not for the rear bridge.

I was able to find two acorns not already squirreled away by all of you Model 70 hoarders:

The 1959 .270 Model 70 FWT is a little rougher than I would have thought from the Gunbroker photos - but still plenty nice.

The scratches, dents and worn varnish is a dead giveaway that the first owner thought this was a hunting rifle.













As to this next one, I'm not sure if it's a keeper.
The wood is not nearly as nice as the .270 FWT.
Just look at the knot in the stock.
It will be heavier to lug around.
Worse, it was made in the 1940's before CNC manufacturing, machine checkering and epoxy dip finishes.

And, alas, it uses this odd cartdidge:

That .270 fwt has some nice grain in the wood, how dare someone take it into the woods!

You don't think the first owner used this to kill animals. How shocking.

Here's my 1951 22 Hornet that was rechambered to 222 Rem and had a Pachmayr pad added like many in the '50s.

I just found the correct period Redfield base and mounted my 440 Weaver with the Litschert Varmint Master attachment.

Wow, some really beautiful rifles. Not trying to start a new thread, but I have a question and maybe some of you guys can help me. Having been in the military I have always favored the stainless/glass in camo for all my hunting rifles. Now back for a bit from overseas, I am really getting bitten by the pre-64 Bug. I am looking at a standard 30-06 in reasonable shape for $999- Is that fair/reasonable. Think it was made in 54.

Well, it's a beauty and I probably should just keep it, but I have some other rifles (and 308's) that I am shooting more lately and have them slated for next years hunts.

I've seen them cheaper in my area but if it is "all original" that isn't too far off base. I've got one that isn't all original (changed the stock so it is more suited for hunting/shooting) but it is a tack driver and I know its capabilities and its history. I would never let mine go for less than a grand. But that is just me.... I'd also like to see some pics if you can ge them.. Thanks..

Thats a very nice rifle and a great deal..I was just out shooting my SS Hawkeye 308 yesterday alongside my FN model 70 308 fwt and that ruger hangs in there with the winchester with no problems.
