You can get out of it in LA by hunting in an elevated stand.
Honestly unless I travel out west I haven't even really thought about it. Been hunting in TX for the last 15 years where it's not required except on public land hunts.
Having run into literally hundreds if not thousands of hunters in LA, TX and MS while working in the field and/or riding along with a Game Warden I have never personally witnessed a hunter in gun season for deer actually wearing anything hunters orange except on a public land (Forest Service) or WMA hunt. I've yet to see anyone get ticketed either, but I'm sure it happens. Yeah, while you're in the stand. You still have to wear it to and from. And most hunters in LA hunt on clubs that require wearing more than the min hat. As far as seeing someone get ticketed, come hunt on Red Dirt Management area in Kasatchie National Forest, you'll see it. I've seen vest being measured to make sure they were 400sq.in. And I've see someone ticketed, while wearing a vest, for not wearing his orange hat. I'd love to see a game warden try and accurately measure 400 square inches in the field. Nothing against game wardens but I would have to break out the test results where 50% of them in the state of LA couldn't accurately ID the top 3 most commond ducks harvested in the state

Maybe; but I don't mind educating them.

Well the great thing about hunter orange is it eliminates accidental deaths and makes the Game wardens real job easier giving tickets.

Jraw, I think you've already got the difference between designer orange and blaze orange figured out. The few game wardens I've bumped into have been armed with a bureauocratic type personality. Don't take chances to ruin a fun experience.

I was hunting in east Tennessee wearing a Tennessee Vols hat that was Vol orange. The game warden told me under no uncertain terms that Tennessee orange is NOT hunter orange. Didn't get a ticket but did get a warning to get the proper hat. I did have a vest on. Maybe he was a Gator fan......

Blaze Orange. Nearly everytime I deal with it (frequently) I recall years ago a man shooting his father out of a tree in the Adirondacks. The father was clothed completely in blaxe orange, sox, pants, jacket, and hat. The man said he thought his dad was a bear! Blaze orange is not manditory where I hunt but I hunt in a blaze vest anyway.

While Washington State specifies "fluorescent hunter orange," there is no definition of same in the regs, or the revised code of Washington, or, for that matter, on the Sherwin Williams site. although wikipedia gives this dfinition for "safety orange:" Approximate PMS (Pantone) Color (actually, mixing directions):
13 parts Yellow, 3 parts Warm Red, 1/4 part Black
Safety orange is the same color as blaze orange, the shade of orange (Color No. 12199) required by United States law (U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, Title 15 Commerce and Foreign Trade, Section 1150.3) to be on the tips of barrels of replica guns such as airsoft guns, and cap or toy gunsalthough, the federal standard color referenced looks like this: http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=12199So, I wear orange that looks orange and we'll let the judge sort out the details if it comes to that.
