I don't pack a Cruiser for western hunts;but in New England I never leave home without one in the fall.

Take a look at stormy kromer. They make a mackinaw with 26oz wool.
Just bought one with a zip in vest. Looks bomb proof.

thanks....that hunt was in the briar jungles of the Atchafalaya basin, where most of the woodcock in north America end up by late December. Mr. Greener never dreamed his little wand would end up slogging through an American swamp 110 years later.

Stormy, Woolrich, Cabelas, LLBean, et al, use an 80/20 wool blend. Filson is about the only company that still offers 100% virgin wool clothing.

I pracice and sight in with the coat. That rifle stock that was perfect in a t-shirt in August just doesn't fit right while wearing one, but that 94 with the too short lenght of pull feels a lot better in one.

Same here. A guy goes into the field wearing a wool coat and comes out wearing a ghillie suit.

I stand corrected. When I clicked on SK's website I saw their "Airman's Jacket" which is 80% wool, and I turned away before looking further. I just revisited the site and discovered the Mackinaw which is 26oz 100% virgin wool, and a handsome coat.

My Dad bought a red/black double Mac and tin cloth surveyor's jacket back in the mid 60s. He wore them for hunting and chores frequently and they still look great. When he died last year, I had the Mac dry cleaned and mailed it to my best friend in MT whom my dad was real fond of. It was too small for me to ever wear and still gets to keep hunting.
I got lucky and bought a near new second hand double Mac of my own last year. Filson did a limited run of woven in camo and they're a little tough to find. It is hot as others said if you're moving but perfect for a stand or with a thin waterproof shell over top for duck hunting.
My Dad and his friend swamped a duck boat off the Barrier Islands duck hunting in the 70s and it took them about 15 hours before the weather broke and they could get back. My dad had the double Mac on and his buddy a down Eddie Bauer coat under a poncho. Dad was fine but his friend spent a week in the hospital with pneumonia. Hard to argue with wool under the right conditions.
