Guys-would y'all please take a look at this 270 win Husqvarna rifle and please tell me what model it is. My dad picked it up in the early 60's. Also would it be a small or large ring Mauser?

Marked-HUSQVARNA VAPENFABRIKS A.B. 270 WINCH

Serial #1212xx The only thing is the 2's look funny,like a top part of 9 with a 2 bottom. Almost like something was upside down.

SBHVA-I read you are the resident expert on these rifles, any tidbit you have would be great. I can get some better pictures if needed, just let me know.

I do believe that is an FN action.. large ring.
Perhaps a Husqvarna Model 640,
but don't hold me to it wink

I need to see pictures of the rest of the stock to tell you the exact model.

Except for the safety, it looks like a Husqvarna 1951 Hi-Power in 270 that I bought about a year ago. But the safety on mine was a Buehler so it was a replacement. If so, it is a FN made large ring action, barreled and stocked by Husqvarna. Arctic beech was used for the stocks. (information from a 1979 Gun Traders Guide by Paul Wahl).

Your rifle looks to be in good condition. Better than mine which had been neglected for decades and apparently used (carried a lot but not shot much) judging from the marks on the stock before being relegated to the back of a closet for 30 years. In my rifle the action is smooth, feeds cartridges slickly and shoots surprisingly well (groups under 2" @200 yards with 130 g. Hornady bullets.).

Yours should be an excellent (but relatively heavy) hunting rifle. I've gotten very fond of mine.

Hmmm, it appears that there is rust on the floor plate. I'd pull the stock off and check for rust on the metal covered by the stock. It appears that a recoil pad was put on in years past.

Tripletail;

That is a '51 Hi Power which uses the FN commercial large ring 98 action (also known as the 640 family of models). You need mounts to fit a large ring 98, NOT the small ring Husqvarna (HVA) action.

This link will help you find the correct fit mounts:

Sactoller;

Your rifle is a model 1000 that uses the FN large ring 98 action.

I have a 640 barreled action that I'm trying to find a stock. Any ideas?

Paul, most any M-98 stock should be an easy fit. Triggers and safety will be the only issues.
I may have an extra one similar to sactoller if you are interested. It is at our Circle Hot Springs cabin and I will be up there next month and could photograph it if you are interested.

Thanks for the info on the model...It is the one rifle that I will never get rid of. Took it to Namibia last year...and it got the job done!

I can't say as I've ever heard of arctic beech. Arctic birch, yes, but not arctic beech. Although, I'll admit, it looks like a beechwood stock.

I believe you are correct, in that it should read "Arctic birch", but beech is in the book cited so I left it as it was. (The only references to "Arctic Beech" found in a Google search was for bonsai trees! Also it applied to southern hemisphere species -- which makes no sense at all; another facet of the curse of using common names for plant species.)

Arctic birch has traditionally been used for gun stocks and knife handles in Scandinavia and Russia.

Husqvarna stocks for modern guns are either beech or walnut. Arctic birch (which is very distinctive) was used on military rolling block rifles.

Then I stand corrected and the book is apparently correct. Thank you sbhva for clearing that up.
