What do you guys think about using this scope on a 340 weatherby for 900 yard shots on Elk size game ?

Regardless of scope choice, I've gotta ask, where on earth do you shoot where you need to hold 1 MOA at a 1/2 mile+ shot and be able to get an elk out of the field - that you couldn't close some distance?

How much experience do you have shooting 900 yards?

Well I made a 1 shot kill at 800 yds this year with a much lesser scope..and horses do help get an elk out of such a place..and don`t waste your prayers on such a meaningless cause I travel all over with my job and it doesnt take long to find there are much more important issues that need your prayers !

i don't have one of those scopes, but with 75 moa elevation travel, it should get you to 900.

but what caught my eye is 4.9" eye relief (on 4x). that's as much as the 2.5X Ultralight.

I asked in earnest. In AZ, while we can sometimes see 100+ miles on a clear day and can make out cattle at a couple of miles out, I was trying to imagine a scenario where I'd need to take a shot that far out.

This year's deer hunt presented a couple of 500y shots but I'm not in that kind of need / practice. Instead closed ground.

For elk, I could only imagine a cross-canyon shot would be that far and present the difficulty of getting closer. Of course, the canyon I'm thinking of was nearly a mile cross and would be going into another unit to boot.

The CDS scope dials typically start at 200 YDS and stop at 800

What bullet are you using that will expand at 900 yards?

For long Range you would be better off with a VX3 4.5x14LR with M1 turret,or a VX3 3.5x10 with an M1 turret!

Curious, would you provide particulars as to rifle/cartridge/bullet/scope? What was used to determine range? How'd you figure windage?

Thanks.

Aviator, if you post questions like this in the LR hunting section, you might get more real answers and less bile.

the ones asking you to pass a quiz won't have answers for you anyway.

I've used a 340 quite a bit (worn out a couple barrels) so have some experience with it. I had an old 4-12, personally I wasn't a fan of it. But, they sure could of changed a lot over the years.

If you like the scope it'll do you well. For going to 900 I'd think about a M1 on top but I don't have any experience with the CDS either.

Sorry I can't be of any real help here but I think if you work this thru you'll be just fine.

My old 70 has an ultra accurate 375 Wby barrel on it now (Schneider), but I've given some thought to going back to the 340 just cause I liked it so much.

I had my 3-10 Leo with a M1 on top of my 375 Bee for a while, was a kick butt combo with the 260 NBT or the old 250 X.

Best of luck to ya!

you do understand making a shot like that isn't going to be mount a scope and presto right?? I say that because your asking what scope to use. the CDS in most situations tops out around 800 yards, because you are limited to one turn of the turret.

there is a whole lot more preparatory that needs to be done in order to connect at that distance. I have worked extensively with my 243 ai it shoots 1/2 moa at 500 yards with at or less than 2" of vertical spread at that range. also in order to shot those type of groups I used a 6.5-20x scope, putting my mark 4 4.5-14x40 on opened my groups up quite a bit. for 900 yards while not mandatory I am thinking a higher x scope than you are wanting, I am also thinking parrallax adjustment as well.

to make it simple check out graybulls precision modded leupold, watch some of his videos, develop a load that shoots good and wring it out at the range with practice. a 340 weatherby doesn't sound like much fun to practice with and I have never heard of a 340 weatherby capable of the accuracy I am talking about.

I've had three 340 Wby barrels, all 3 were Schneider 4.5 wts. All 3 would easily shoot the way they would need to to go to 1K. As well, I've been around another half dozen or so put together in similar manner that would do as well. All done on 70's/700's and or Mausers.

Put together by a good smith and to me the 340's been one of the all time most accurate rounds I've ever worked with.

Now if we're talking about the accuracy of the factory rigs, the my experience would totally line up with what you've exprienced.

Absolutely! As a few have said when the CDS elev dial is installed you'll get slightly less than one full rotation of the dial, thus 900 may not be possible; might be! The scope it's self will come with a non-caliber specific dial that does "not" have the build in stop. Kind of a short M1 dial. Go for it!

Alan

PS. Just checked my CDS and was able to rotate it 14 minutes from bottom stop to top stop.
