Im a young man who recently left the United States Marine Corps Reserve after a deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. I work full time and I go to school full time. However, Gunsmithing has peaked my interest as it seems to be a dying trade and the only ones I know are old-timers. Except of course the stuff you see on t.v. which can be a bit outlandish at times.... Ive bought a book on gunsmithing rifles and thats all fine and well but as Im sure most will agree, you have to have hands on training and instruction AND a piece of paper before people will start handing you their weapons for repair or otherwise. Im looking for something that can be done in the summer..... Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The National Rifle Association sponsors a series of summer gunsmithing courses, they take place at several of the gunsmithing schools around the country. The curriculum is pretty comprehensive, it sounds as though some of these classes might fit your needs. I am a graduate of the gunsmithing program at Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado, Trinidad was one of the first schools to participate in this program. You might want to check out their website to see what courses are being offered there this summer.

Do a lot of research on why "gunsmithing is a dying trade" before you commit a lot of time and money.

Read this thread over on Cast Boolits. Lots of good things mentioned about gunsmithing as a career.

Murray State College gunsmithing program

I went to Montgomery Community College way back when. It was a very good start. I worked several years at a medium sized full-service gunshop then had my own business for several years. Finally decided I needed to earn a better living so I tinker now.
