I just found out about these Chiappa rifles. Any thoughts about their quality? Could they withstand the same pressure levels as the Marlin 1895?

From their website:

1886 Kodiak Trapper 6-shot

Going after large or dangerous game? The 1886 Kodiak Trapper combines tradition with nostalgia and adds a helping of modern technology.

Chambered in 45-70 and featuring the time-proven 1886 action, the Kodiak delivers serious knock-down power (up to 1800 FPS and 1.5 tons of energy when using Hornady LEVERevolution Ammunition).

The Kodiak Trapper has a walnut stock with soft Touch Armor coating to protect the stock and increase grip even when wet. The half octagon 18.5" barrel has express style sights and a brushed nickel finish to increase durability in poor weather conditions. The Kodiak Trapper has a straight buttstock to improve quick pointing needed on a backup rifle (comes with recoil pad). The barrel is drilled and tapped for "Scout Mount" optics QD swivels.

Price: $1395.00

Caliber: 45-70

Capacity: full magazine with 6+1 cartridge capacity

Barrel Length: half octagon 18.5"

Total Length: 37"

Weight: 8.5 lbs.

Finish: Brushed nickel

I wonder if someone makes a larger loop lever that could be installed on this. Also I cannot tell if this has a safety or would you just have the hammer on half cock? Rufous.

It's an 1886 copy...Pressure tested to the Italian Reproduction CIP standards to be safe for the pressure of the cartridge it is chambered for....it is NOT a Marlin 1885 repro...nothing on it that didn't come original, except maybe the big loop lever and modern steels. Exceed 28KPSI 45-70 pressures at your own risk.

Chiappa has a link for questions plus a FAQ link...it might be better to ask them to get it from the "horses mouth".

I have a 50-90 Sharps from them. It has modern steels in both the barrel and receiver but Chiappa WON'T say what type or if it can handle higher pressures and neither will any other Repro maker. I have NO doubt it will handle the 28KPSI pressure limit for the 50-90 cartridge, but I won't/don't need to go beyond that pressure limit.

I just looked over their 1886 copy in the long version with the cresent butt-stock. The color case-hardening and blueing was quite good, and the overall feel of the action was OK, the wood to metal fit could have been a little better for a $1200 retail gun. I didn't look for the safety, assumed it was a half-cock original style. The rear sight (buck-horn style) metal was pretty thin and the notch was a fine cut, I'd have to open it up for my eyes, much like a US Model 1903 rear sight picture. Overall, I thought the gun was a bit over-priced for the money asked and I couldn't find many reviews of the rifle for quality. They (company website) claim that the 1886 parts interchange.

I bought a 1886 like AH64guy was talking about...I bought it last summer and it was nothing but TROUBLE
From brand new out of the box it would not feed any brand of ammo I tried to feed it.I never got to fire it I took it back to the place I bought it from and he sent it back to Chiappa in Ohio where they repair all Chiappas.I didn't hear anything from them or where I bought it from for 3 months. So I called Chiappa and got the total run around from them for another 2 months. They said they had to order the parts from Italy...you would think they would stock the parts for all the guns they sell!

Chiappa Customer Service is horrible!
I wouldn't believe a thing they would tell you!

I'll never look at another Chiappa again.

If you want an 1886 look for a used Browning
or pre-Remington Marlin 1895 you'll be much better off.

I bought a Browning 1886 I wanted the old time look. The action is smooth as butter and it can handle any loads you can feed it.I'm not big into shooting the hot loads but from what I have read the Browning will handle most anything.

Mossyoak - +1 on the Miroku made Browning and Winchester 1886 rifles. They are as strong as they look and feel and shoot straight. I can not comment on the customer service because I have never needed it on any of my five Miroku made long guns (2 SxS and 3 big bore levers).
