Just order the new VX-1 for 229.00. The new version is the same as the old VX-II.

I saw that, and a good deal it is but I opted for the new VX2 3-9x40 with the improvements for $279.00 and free shipping from Cabelas. I think the new scope is worth the extra change...............Hb

. According to the specs for both, yes exactly the same. Multicoat 4, 1/4 click adjustments etc.

You are correct. Wonder why Leupold has not updated their website? Funny that even with the Multicoat 4 it is only listed as over 90% light transmission which I think was equal to the old Vari-X scopes. I deleted my inaccurate post

You need to take the light transmision %'s from the various manufacturers and throw them out the window.

True but it seems with the better coatings that they would tout the improvements

So........since the early 1970's we have:

-The Vari-X Roman Numeral II's and III's.

--In the late 90's they improved the Vari-X Roman Numeral II's with click adjustments just like the Vari-X Roman Numeral III's, and named it the.....(drum roll).......Vari-X Roman Numeral IIc.

-Then, in 2003 Leupold introduced the VX-Roman Numeral II's and III's. The II's retained the click adjustments and gained the old Vari-X Roman Numeral III's lens coatings. The VX-Roman Numeral III's were "improved" with "Matched Index Lens".......whatever that means......Oh yeah, and the 2003 versions of the VX-Roman Numeral II's didn't originally have the new lens coatings until later in the year even though they had renamed it the VX-Roman Numeral II from the Vari-X Roman Numeral II earlier in the year........Oh yeah, and Leupold introduced the VX-Roman Numeral I, which was the same as the old Vari-X Roman Numeral II with no click adjustments.

-In 2009 (or thereabouts) Leupold improved the VX-Roman Numeral III's with newer, Diamond Pixie Dust lens coating, a dual erector system, and renamed them...(drum roll again)....VX-Arabic Number 3.

-Now, Leupold has renamed the VX-Roman Numeral I's and II's to VX-Arabic Number 1 and 2. The VX-Arabic Number 1 now has the same lens coating as the previous VX-Roman Numeral II's, and the VX Arabic Number 2's have the same lens coatings and Matched Index Lens as the VX Arabic Number 3's. Sheesh.

So......if you guys have any questions, figure it out yourself!

+2 on the breakdown. No question those seem like good prices. I quit chasing the "improvements" a couple of years ago. The last Leupold I bought was a VX3 2.5-8. I bought it because I liked the scope for a specific rifle, not because I thought it was optically that much better.

Granted I don't hunt anymore in real low light, thick cover situations but when I did, 15 years or so and further back what was available from Leupold and some other brands at that time seemed plenty adequate to me. I can't see enough difference now to justify the money. I've got a 1989 VariX III 3.5-10x40, pre Mc4, that still seems like a real good scope. YMMV.

I agree, I have Vari-X II's and III's VXII's and VXIII's along with a few VX3's and now this new VX2 and I don't see much (if any) "improvements" optically for real world hunting situations over all these years and all these different models. I know leupold has made improvements in coatings and Argon gas is probably better than Nitrogen but in the deer woods I have not seen any noticeable leaps optically..............Hb

I love it when Leupold brings out a "new and improved" version. All these guys that have to have the newest and best dump the old models and I get to buy them at a good price! Keep it up Leupold!
