Hey Winchester guys, maybe you can help me out. I know that the pre-64 Model 100s and 88s in .284 caliber were only made for about 6 months, and you pay a definite premium for the pre-64's in that caliber. However, I also notice that those selling the post-64 Models also seem to think they are worth a premium just because they are in the .284 caliber. Are the post-64's in .284 more rare than, say the .243? I know the .308's are the most common, but I'm just wondering if people aren't confused in their asking prices for the post-64's in .284??? Any thoughts or comments??? Thanks.

.284's in any flavor a relatively rare and bring a premium. In my opinion the premium is usually too high, but that's a matter for the market to decide.

Here is my advice regarding Winchester 100s in 284; ALWAYS insist on shooting a couple of magazines of ammo BEFORE buying it, as I have found Win 100s in 284 to be VERY MAGAZINE SENSITIVE. Win 100s in 243 and 308 will almost always feed from random magazines, but not so, in my experience, with the 284s.

I don't know what the distribution of 243, 284, and 308 are for the pre and post-'64 Win 100s, but I've owned a couple dozen of them over the past 30+ years and see more in 308 than 243 and more in 243 than 284. I currently have 3 post-'64 Win 100s, a 243 and 2 308s.

Also have 4 post-'64 Win 88s in 284, 2 rifles and 2 carbines, they are not magazine sensitive like the Win 100s are, probably because the action isn't cycled nearly as quickly.

Of all the 100 and 88's the 243 is the best of the bunch in my opinion . Never was a fan of the 284

Winchester factory ammo in 284 and 308 run at approximately the same velocities, but 284 ammo is always more expensive and harder to find. Other than the "cool factor" associated with shooting a 284, I can't see Why folks willingly pay significantly more $$ for the same level of performance.

X2842 = 150 grain PP at 2,860 fps.
X3085 = 150 grain PP at 2,820 fps.

I have thought that, with few exceptions, like the Savage 99 and Winchester 88/100, the 284 pretty much died the day that the 7mm SAUM and 270/7mm WSM came onto the scene.

prices are inflated on the internet site for sure
and what some people say the %condition is of their gun is a pipe dream on their part

i had 2 .308 100,s thru out the years and like a fool i sold both
both were purchased from private parties in 95-98% condition wood and metal

i got one in colorado springs in 1985 a post 64 with pressed checkering for 300 dollars of a desperate guy that wanted beer money to go to the bar aweek after payday

most single soldiers are basically broke within one week of payday

(i dont even think old dude got laid after the bar either) laugh

sold that one at ft hood tx in 1989 for 350

then i got another from a guy in kentucky in 1994 a pre 64 with a factory polished bolt with paperwork for 450 and it was the original owner that sold that to me

sold it like a fool in 1999 for 500 in maine to freind who had an itch he had to scratch

gunbroker and gunsamerica prices are at least 100-150 more than book values and the conditions as said by sellers on their are not what they really are per book description let alone values.

i wish i could get a .308 100 again
i surely do....
great handling rifle for under 150 yard shots with a peep sight installed
sleek looking,light weight
good knockdown power with good 150 grain bullets

I really like my first year Model 100. It's a shooter and it's in great shape. The only 308 that I actually enjoy shooting....as far as 284's, I've heard they don't feed as well. I don't want a rifle if it's not going to function properly so that should detract from the value of the 284 no matter how rare it is..... whistle

My question is, how much would you pay for one that shoots like this:

3 shot group before sight adjustment with factory irons:

4 shot group with factory irons adjusted for center of bull at 50 yards:

Or scoped at 100 yards:

Oh, sorry I forgot we were talking about the jamming sob 284.....mine's a 308... whistle

Just a quick note to jamming .284's. I have a .25 /284 88 built on a 1958 action, it has a Hart stainless barrel that shoots like a bolt rifle. Now the but,it has very lazy ejection, and it will misfeed 25 % of the time. I am having the barrel pulled, cotuor duplicated and a new 7mm08 barrel installed. My .308s feed great and I just cannot see having a lever gun that wont get a second shot off.

Quite a few semi-autos out there are really just single-shot rifles. However, single-shot rifles do deserve some respect. Just change your mindset about the rifle. I have a Bullard .32-40 single-shot rifle that I think highly of, why not a Winchester .284 as well? wink

I can't speak of the Mod 100, but I do have an post 64 88 in .284. It will shoot equal to or better than most if not all the bolt actions I have owned with loads it likes.

The wood on the Pre 64s is better and the checkering too. However, an old gunsmith I took a post and pre 64 to to get worked on commented that the post 64 was easier to work on and not as rough. With the history of the post and pre 64s in all models I was wondering if he was confused about which was which.

I love my first year model 100 (pre 64). The checkering is more to my taste than the basket weave pattern on the post model. I upgraded the firing pin due to the recall and it's been great!!! Amazingly accurate and fun to shoot..
