If you're looking for meat, the month before the rut.

Most good lodges have a success rate above 90%, so no real bad time to go.
Opening week is always good, little better chance of nice weather and population at max. As M940 noted, also better meat prior to rut, tho there is no such thing as bad moose. Most lodges offer guides some incentive for the first moose of the season. Some years the rut is not so far from the opening week that calling will occasionally get some interest.
Having said that, hunting in the rut can be exciting as it is a great experience to work rutting bulls with a call.
Weather can be the big variable on the rock.

Imagine your grave on a windy winter night. You've been dead for 70 years.
It's been 50 since a visitor last paused at your tombstone.....
Now explain why you're in a pissy mood today.

Here in NB the rut is on or about the last two weeks of Sept. I'd look for those weeks there as well.

The guys have got it right. First week for meat and first week of Oct. for calling.
A hot bull coming in ready for a fight at 20 yards sure beats calling turkeys. I know!

the creed of ignorance,
and the gospel of envy,
its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.
