Stuck in shotgun only state we are limited in options for gun season. It is even tougher being a semi-rifle looney. Really the extra range isnt needed, but it is a pleasure to carry a nicely balanced rifle. When the Savage 220F came out it is was close to a bolt rifle as we legally can use, but I always hated the way it carried. The magazine is right at the balance point. Yes, it is an interesting scope/mount combo for a slug gun...long story crazy I have made several mods to this thing and and am still planning on doing some things to the bolt, but it was raining so I decided to see if I could adapt the magazine to be flush. Well it is possible with a little bit of work, fitting, and two part epoxy. I am now limited to two shots, but the gun sure feels better in the hands.

Yes, I had to snip off a 1 1/2 coils and do a little bending. Pretty simple though.

Looks awesome! I also love my Savage 220F slug gun but hate the way the magazine hangs. I wish savage would have made the gun ADL style to hold one extra round. I have a McMillan HTG (M40) stock which should arrive for my 220F today that would look even better with your flush magazine modification.

I honestly didn't know there was an aftermarket stock option. I put featherweight bondo in the front to stiffen the fore end up and Great Stuff in the buttstock to kill the hollow sound. Please post pics or IM me when you get it put together. I'd love to see it.

I talked to the guys at McMillan about two months ago and the only hunting stock option for the 220f as of now is the HTG (M40). I will post a picture up when it gets here which is hopefully today.

Putting a McMillan Slug Hunter on my 210F was one of the best choices I've ever made. Like you, I only get one shell down in the mag but it looks and feels so much better.

The biggest advantage to me though is a proper cheek weld and better recoil management.

Working on collecting slugs now to try. Waiting on the new federal tipped copper slugs to hit the shelf to test also. I'll post up some groups after that. Would also like to mod my magazine like the OP and have the metal coated as the rough finish sucks.

In both 12 and 20 gauge I've had best luck with Remington Accu-Tips and Lighfield Hybrid EXP in factory loads. That's from a 210F and 220.

So far my gun has hated all 3" slugs. Best results have been with the 2 3/4" Accutips but they are also the only 2-3/4" slugs I have tried. So far have ordered the following 2-3/4" slugs to try:

-Lightfield Hybred EXP
-Remington Premium Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded
-Hornady SST
-Winchester Supreme Partition Gold
-Winchester Supreme Elite Dual-Bonded

Once the new 2-3/4" federal tipped copper slugs are available I will order a box and begin testing

That is about the nicest slug thrower I have seen; youll get a lot of double takes if you run into other hunters with that one! I bet it handles nice too.

As for ammo, the 3 inch Accutips shot best for me. They are about impossible to find around here, so I always snag a box when I see them. I just cannot understand why the sabot loads are so darn expensive! I am trying to locate a source for 20 gauge sabots that will let me load 44 or 45 cal pistol bullets for practice and low recoil loads for my son.

BTW, I learned that my gun definitely shoots best tightening both front and rear action screws fairly tight. I went through lots of cash trying to find an accurate load before I discovered this. I bedded mine and treated it the same as my rifles; tighten the front screw firm and just snug the rear. This did NOT work on my 220.

With bedded guns I tighten equally and to 45-55 in-lbs depending on what the gun likes.

OK, that does it. The H&R sewer pipe 12 Gauge Ultra Hunter is going down the road. Savage now makes this in a lefty version, so it looks like I have run out of excuses.
