Nice kudu!
I would second everybody who suggested checking the chamber on ANY older .300 H&H, even pre-'64 Model 70's, since so many were rechambered to .300 Weatherby and even some wildcats based on the .300 H&H. I know a guy who bought a pre-'64 that has been converted to .300 Wby. at a gun show, and it wasn't re-marked. He got a surprise when he extracted the first fired case!
Those rechamberings are one reason the price of pre-64's and 721's in .300 H&H are pretty high.

My HH has been converted but the smith did stamp the barrel.

I picked up a 721 in .300 HH a couple of years ago for $600.00, very good condition, 26" barrel, also came with the original recoil pad. As mentioned by another poster it was hard as a rock so picked up another 721 stock for 25.00 and put a new recoil pad on it so I still have the original. The first load I tried was 200 grain Sierra's with H4831, shot so well the first trip to the range that I haven't played with much else. Put a 3x9x50 Leupold on it that I took off my .280. It's not a light rifle, but I really like it.

I've bought two over the past couple of years, a 721 and a 40-XB. The stock on my 721 has lots of drop (I believe it's a standard stock vs. the high comb stock) but the action is slick as ice and the 40-XB will stack 'em on top of one another reliably. They're good conversation starters at the range too.
Cases can be a bit of a problem but check around, you can usually find them somewhere although they're normally at a slight premium.

Is your 40XB custom or factory?

Rechambering a vintage 300 H&H, without a damned good reason, is an unpardonable sin. Glad I got a Pre-64 before the unbubbaed ones were snapped up.

JB,
I've seen bolt set back in two, both original 300 H&H. It may be anecdotal, however.

Did Remington chamber any 700s in 300H&H besides the Classic?
