Ran into a .222 H&R that has a sako action, I would love to have it, but don't need a triple duece, as I already have a .223 and a .223ai. Can the boltface be opened up easily enough, and what can I fit in the action? I want something .257 - .264. 25wsm? 260rem? 6.5rem mag?

the quick answer is the sako actions were sized for the respective cartridge classes. i'm sure it can be done, open bolt face, make it feed, lengthen magazine box, but i don't believe it will be easy or cheap. i don't think it fits your "easily enough" criteria.

You can answer that question yourself.....just look at the bolt diameter and size of that boltface.

I have a Vixen opened up a bit in order to accomodate a 30 Remington head size. The rifle is now a 6MM Rimless Wasp.

Nothing like what you want to move to but opened up a bit.

How about just re barreling to 6 X 45 or 47 or to 25 TCU

223 case or 222 Mag case opened up to 6 or 25?

Yes, you NEED a 222! I have older sako's in 222 AND 223. the 222 is the most wonderful alking around varminter one could ever ask for or want.

Re doing one to a larger caliber would be not only expensive, but a crime against nature and an abomination!

If you are not going to buy it and use it, maybe you could let us all know where it is.

6.5 Grendel would probably run in the L461. You would need a PPC extractor and some work on the follower to get it to feed, but it should be possible.

If she ain't your wife yet, then you are in a great position to just buy it arn't you? You need to start setting precedents now, while you have a chance! smile

I really really love my two older Sako's of a similar era. Just wonderful rifles. Nothing made today can match them.

BTW, the picture in your avatar is the sign for the door entering into my gun/reloading/man cave room. Funny stuff!

If I wanted a larger bore, I'd open the action and make something on the PPC case.

I'd never change a 222 bolt though! (Just me)

I'm pretty sure there were some factory 6ppc L461's. So I guess that would be possible. No reason you can't buy it and punch it out to 223 or 223ai, just keep in mind the mag box is pretty small on those. I've got an original in 222 and a custom in 223, probably my favotite action.

I'll be picking it up friday after work. It's going to stay a 222.

GREAT grab, and choice. Check out the section on loading for the 222 in the Barnes #4 loading manual (thier most recent) the history of the round and intro was written by someone you kinda know <G>

The rifle will shoot far better than it should for as light as it is.

the l461s are highly praised and will shoot with anything made to date. if you have a 222 rem you have one of the most accurate chamberings in one of the best small actions in history. i own 3 of them. my origonal one is on its 3rd barrel, now in 222. you could think about the 20 tac or 20 practical. low recoil and verry verry accurate. the 20 tac kinda replaced my 22-250s. and 223 ak. i still have them just never use them much. pm me if you decide to sell your 222 barrel. there are also a few wildcats in 6mm and 257 based on the 222 rem mag case.

It has been a while since I've had a good look at one, but I think that the mag box is very short.

Take a good look at the desired OAL of any wildcat you might want to change it into. That's a honey of a little action, and I'd hate to see you deface it too much. Bolt head size isn't the only determinant for a rechamber.
