They are from whirlpools when the earth was covered by water. Ding...ding...ding!!!! We have a winner. They are tidal in nature and this one was on a grand scale~ They call them maelstroms and there are a couple big ones but not nearly so large! This was enormous and at a time when the water over the area was fairly shallow and tidal flow caused a huge maelstrom over thousands of years. I'm surprised science hasn't come out and stated it emphatically. Forest for the trees I guess. Dan OK, I'll need a reference source for your conclusion. The little bit of research I undertook since your last post doesn't turn up references to similar structures related to maelstroms, and the Wikipedia references point toward a laccolith-like origin.

There are no structures of that vastness, however there are some fairly large maelstroms that occur naturally and in the exact same place day in and day out due to tidal influences. If the water is shallow enough for the forces to reach the bed, you would see this motion. If you go to certain places in the US, you will find where similar whirl pools have actually created fairly large Pot Holes.
I think science will conclude that this is simply the remnant of a very large maelstrom that based on surrounding features, repeated itself tidally for thousands of years, If the coastal oceans were emptied, many of these would be discovered. As it is, the Sahara has been dry for many thousands of years and with no hydrological or geological forces other than wind, to erase this formation.
There is really no other logical explanation.

You should research and write a note for one of the journals that deal with geomorphology and stay the course until it is accepted for publication. It would take some time. However, if subsequent research supports your hypothesis, your name would be remembered forever by a very narrow segment of the scientific community (not to mention an even narrower segment of the general population). Of course if subsequent research refutes your hypothesis, you would be, at best, just a footnote (or maybe just an asterisk). <Grin>
