For general all-round goodness it would be tough to improve on a 7/08.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

There is also the 6.5x55 improved that isn't too far behind the 6.5x.284, but doesn't seem to have caught on in the US. I have the 6.5 Rogue, which is simply a 6.5x55BJAI with a 37 degree shoulder. It's a great shooter and can come very close to the 6.5x284 speeds. Jeff

If I had an SA M70 laying around, I'd be looking awfully hard at a .284 (or one of the wildcats base upon it), 6mm or 6mm AI. 6-284........8 twist.

I like my M70 Classic Featherweight in 7mm-08 a whole bunch. 120 TSX at 3100 make for little recoil, and very little tracking.

The smart choice would be to leave it alone. Failing that, next choice would be the plain Jane 7mm08. However, of late I've been fooling around with a 6.5x55 that I'm very impressed with. Just thinking out loud for you.

For Mark and Cocadori, the short action M70 is a 3.1" action, not a 2.8" action. Big difference. As it comes from the factory it's a 2.8" action. To make the longer rounds work you have to remove the magazine spacer, shorten the bolt stop and ejector, and rework the rear of the feed rails. It's not as simple as it sounds and the one time I did it with a .257 Roberts I never did get it to feed 100%. I'm sure a good gunsmith could get one to feed but it'd be much easier just to stick to a .308 based cartridge like a .243, .260, 7mm-08, 338 federal or 358 winchester. Do have pictures of the modifications or a link to the procedure?

I built a 6.5x55 on a short model 70 and it worked great. The 284 was a bit problematic but works OK once the feeding is sorted out. I just don't think a lot of the cartridge regardless of the bullet diameter it is pushing. Every one I have built over the last 35 years, has been built over my objections! There has been a recent resurgence in the popularity of the 284 as a long range target round. When we tried it in 1980 it wasn't all that special and I don't think much has changed now. Given the choice, I would be inclined to go with a 7mm SAUM over the 284. If I was building a 6.5, I would go with the 6.5x55 or, for something a bit hotter, the 6.5 Remington Mag. This is all just mental exercise though since I won't be doing any of them! GD

If I decided to go another route on the M70 SA, other than 284 Winchester, I'd go 257 Roberts or 6mm remington. Probably AI both.
Oops! See in the OP that cow elk is on the potential kill list. I'd feel obligated to leave AS IS! The .308 can still be fun. Heck, what's more fun than a cartridge that seems to shoot well out of everything and at most available bullet weights??
There's a lot of goodness in 165gr Accubonds, 165gr GameKings, and 150gr TTSXs. The list goes on and on!

"284" When we tried it in 1980 it wasn't all that special and I don't think much has changed now. I have to admit the evolution of better propellant has made the 284 Win a better cartridge today that it was in the 80's. How much better? That's another discussion all by it's self. Jeff

Like Scott, I have a 284 win built on the SA M-70. Four down is not a problem, and it feeds fine. Like Scott, find a smith who is confident and experienced in working with this action and it would be a dandy. On the other hand the 7x57ai would also be in the same league and should work great in that action.
