I have a Remington 600 mohawk in .243 that was my first Rifle 36 years ago, She is the most Accurate rifle I have ever owned out of the box. shot woodchucks, rabbits and others at 300yd+ with open sights back then, can still shoot clover leafs at 100 yards. I found a 660 in .243 I would love to buy my Son.
What is the Difference between the 2 other than the wood on the stocks? The 660 does not have a Rib and the Bolt & Action Serial numbers Match. Do I need to watch out for anything else?
Are these Worth $500 in good condition for age?
Thanks Very Much for the Advice.

ZR,

The original M-600 had a lwt contour barrel and a vent rib. (18.5" lgth) Mfg from '64-'68.

The M-660 had a 20" standard contour barrel with no VR and better sights... Mfg from '68-'71.

The Mohawk 600 was was a clean-up of the parts. It had the same stock as the original M-600 with the standard weight barrel of the M-660 but only 18.5" long. These were manufactured from '71-'79.

I liked the M-660 the best. and I have one in .222 Rem, and one in .308 and another in .338 Fed. (bored from .308)

Hope this helps...

GH

Thanks Grasshoper. That explains alot.
Do you think it may be worth $500? It has some light dings in the stock and the bluing has some wear on the bbl on top by rear sight and at the muzzle, other than that I would say the Bore is Clean,Bolt looks good & not much slop, bottom plate isn't "bowing' down. Thanks. Paul

I think that if you check on Gunbroker.com you will find that that is a pretty good deal. If I hadn't just purchased a 600 in 308 I would be asking you to lead me to the sale if you choose not to buy. I think that the fact that it is a 243 ups the value. Good luck to you.

Sportdog, Thanks for the Info. When it gets here if the Wife has a Fit, I will let you know first that it's for sale.
Seller wrote me back and said $550 is Bottom Dollar, But No Rear Sights. Will/does that matter? Are they Hard to Find?

I can't say about the availability of sights but it does seem that I've seen them on Gunbroker.com and also here on the classifieds. DO NOT tempt me with that rifle!!!! LOL!

A call to Williams, or Brownell ought to find you some sights probably better than what would have come from the factory. If it were me I'd call Williams first and find someone to talk to and tell them what you have, they'll probably have a good idea what sight they have that will just pop on there. Neet little rifle I think your boy will enjoy it. CH

I have a Mohawk 600 in 308. I bought it new in 1974 for $149.99 It is one rifle that my wife will probably be selling after I die. Next to my Blaser K95, it is the most consistently accurate rifle that I own. Many deer and hogs have fallen to it. It has seen many modifications over the years, but accuracy has never waned. I just did a make-over on it.

I paid $125 for my last one in .222. I bought a take-off barrel from Jeff and it shoots pretty good. Original barrel was not too good. It was a little rough in the stock and that might have pushed the price down a little. I personally would not pay $500 for one. I think the short barrel is a little limiting and makes for more muzzle blast than needed in hunting situations.

For that much, I would rather have a Ruger Hawkeye.

Paul,

As far as I know, the .243 is more desirable than the .308. I think, IIRC, I paid $450 for both my .308's 2-5 yrs ago. (I can't really remember when I bought them...) As I said, one has been bored to .338 Fed, and the other is soon to be bored to .358 Win... smile (Far be if from me to leave anything alone...)

If you get it and still need sights, I'm sure I can come up with a set. I'm not so sure that they are not the same as Remington M-700 sights... I take them off most of mine, and likely it will be easy to come up with a set... smile My 61 yr. old eyes just arent' friendly with iron sights any more.... blush
