It's not the material but rather the design that make the standard Weaver bases less than optimal with the Warne rings.

I used the leupold bases and everything worked just fine, id mount these again in a heartbeat.

Yes, I understand that some folks are concerned about the limited surface area that the recoil lug on the Warne rings contact with on the Weaver extruded alloy bases. While I would prefer to have as much contact area between my rings' recoil lug and bases as is reasonable for the design/style of rings/bases in question, after much experience with the Warne/Weaver combination, I am 100% comfortable with them. Besides, I think that Weaver rings are as homely as a bucket of rocks.
