There is no doubt that D'Arcy can shoot, but I think he is a closet M-700 and Mcswirly lover wink

I don't know if you guys have picked up on this. But in my Mauser military, even my slightly lengthened mag box would take those bullets seated to the cannelures. But that little extra, either requires the full length Rem and Win actions, or more than half of the exposed bullet shank below the cannelure must be cut away from the M-98's lower bolt lug abutment. You can get a little from the rear of the mag box, but after that, high pressure rounds will start to cause trouble.

This manifests itself as vertical stringing, and then you have a drawer full of parts, instead of a beautiful, working, rifle. But the M-98's design incorporated a third safety lug under the bolt handle. This keeps the shooter in one piece, as the accuracy goes to H@#l.

I would never argue with Mr. Echols or sully the memory of BobinNH, but here’s an alternative - the 404 Ruger. It fits in a standard LA using a similar capacity case and producing performance comparable to both the classical 404 Jeffery and newer 416 RM or 416 Rigby.

Just another thought which can be built on a Ruger Hawkeye, Win M-70 Classic or one of the LA PFs. If the rail geometry can be made to work, it may fit and feed in a Mauser 98 as well.

It was designed as a DGR cartridge so my preference for those is limited to CRFs. YMMV

I personally like the idea of it being a belted magnum for this kind of work (just a personal preference) but brass availability above all else…
Certainly the 416 Hoffman makes more sense if components availability is the primary goal…
I liked Phil’s idea “the .404 Echols” x)
