It has been years since I've loaded for the 20 ga. and I can't remember the powder charge and powder I used. I think it was 700X, but I'm not sure. I've used a AA wad, but I also found some Claybusters for 20 ga. Anyone have a favorite light load for a 20 ga. I'm mainly going to be shooting skeet. I have lots of #9's I'll be loading, but still unsure of a good powder and wad. Will be using Winchester hulls mostly. Would 700X or Red Dot work in the 20 ga.? Thanks.

I think 700x and red dot are a little fast for the 20.. there may be light (3/4 oz) loads for both of these, but generally the smaller gauges prefer slightly slower powders. Green Dot, Unique, PB, WSF, and the like are more towards what you are looking to use. General weight was in the 15-16 gr zone. You can check online powder manufacturer guides. Alliant and Hodgdon both offer online guidance. For the 1 oz loads, generally something like Herco, Blue Dot, and HS6 are more of what you would use.

Yeap, Green Dot,unique,...
Personally I normally use unique as it is a little slower than GD.

I've been shooting the new Claybuster CB0134-20 wads using 3/4oz of shot to lower cost due to shot prices. I load Green Dot powder in AA hulls. Work well for me. I also shoot 3/4oz 12ga using CB0175-12 over Promo as my main practice shells. I've shot over 5000 3/4oz shells in the 12 and 20 and really have been impressed. No recoil and a pleasure to shoot.

For 7/8oz 20ga loads I use Longshot powder.

For 7/8 oz loads the powders listed above are fine. For a 1 oz load slow magnum powders are called for. I used HS 7/WW 571 for years in heavy field loads, but both are gone. I had to go to Longshot and Blue Dot for heavy loads. Herco works fine too unless you want the fastest velocity.

for skeet 7/8 oz or 3/4 oz is plenty enough.

There is a relatively new powder out called 20/28 made by alliant.

it is an excellent powder for 20 gauge target loads.

as mentioned above red dot and 700x are not suitable for 20 gauge

International Clays and the New 3\4 oz or the 7\8 oz claybuster wad work well for clay targets in the 20. Loaded a pile for the kids to shoot. Loading on a mec press and did have to fool with the bushing to get the powder drop where I wanted it but once the proper size was found by weighing charges it is spot on.

I used to only shoot shotguns and rimfires, then I made the mistake of getting a subscription to handloader.......
