Koshkin did a test of this category of scopes: Inexpensive Scope Comparison

Top of the heap was:

Diamondback 3-9x40 , and it's 10% off this week for the Doug's Gone Fishin' Sale.

Too bad nsaqam didn't tell you about the $70 Pentax Pioneer he had in the classifieds yesterday at about the same time he was recommending the FFII. wink

Seriously, I'd say the FFII is the best buy for that price range. And those Pentax Pioneer II's are supposedly the same scope but branded Pentax instead of Burris. Cameralandny.com still has some for $99. Does anyone know if the Pioneer II's are made in China? The Burris is, or at least was, made in the Philippines. If the Pentax is also made in the Philippines, I would say jump on that deal.

Unless you wanna browse for a used Bushnell Elite 4200, Nikon Monarch, or Sightron SII... Those all offer about as good of glass as anyone ever really needs.

The old Pentax Pioneers were made in Philippines and were just Burris Fullfield II scopes. The newer Pentax Pioneers II are made in China and I have read
Any people have had problems with them.

Gee, Ingwe, haven't "we" told you that you must not put cheap scopes on nice, expensive rifles, particularly custom rifles.....
It matters not if they work to your complete satisfaction.....
Say, aren't you one of those guys who has been hunting in places like Africa alot, not just once and don't you shoot more than one deer a year or so ?

The Pioneer II is indeed made in China.

I never fired the rifle with that scope on it but I will say that the optical qualities are identical to my Fullfield IIs.

I am partial to the fullfield II and my buddy has the redfield that he is pleased with. Actually I had a older nikon prostaff that was a decent scope and if you shop around they can be had for around $100.

The last Natchez catalog I recevied had the 3-9x Burris E1 for $150. I tried a 4.5x-14x Burris E1 briefly in a store and was really impressed with the brightness and sharpness (as much as one can in a store), but it had some tunnel vision. If the 3-9x is as good as the 4.5-14x in terms of resolution and light transmission then its a great deal. I know in-store tests are not the greatest way to test optics, but when a scope, bino, or spotter looks great at first glance, its usually worth taking outside at dusk for further eval. The E1 definitely looked that good to my eyes. And for $150, I can't think of anything with a comparable image. The Diamondback is also nice, but based on memory I'd say the E1 was a bit better.

I don't like the older FFII with the ocular that rotates and never found them optically that special but the E1 seems like an nice upgrade. Just my 2 cents YMMV.

Another vote for this one. Great Japanese made scope and super bang for the buck. I bought two last year for two Stevens 200 7-08's and they got the snot hunted out of them. These are supposedly made in same plant and with same glass as the Weaver Grand Slam

This is a great deal. I called today but they don't sell to people in TN, AL or GA.
Is there a member willing to help me out? I am willing to pay for the cost of the scope and a fee for your trouble and postage to me. PM me please. Thanks.

In that price range I have a Nikon pro-staff, Bushnell Elite 3200, Weaver v-9 and Sightron S-1. The Weaver is the best of the bunch by a slight but noticeable margin.
