This is a potential buy from a friend of a friend. The guy has a rifle that is discribed as a Midland model 2600?(apparently it belonged to the guys brother that passed a couple of years back) Neither are any type of hunter or shooter so asking questions has been difficult.

From the discription(Ive not seen it in person, its in Kentucky at the moment) it sounds like a Savage to me, not real walnut, non-glossy finish and iron sights, but has scroll work on the metal(???) its a .308Win which I dont have at the moment but also a RH bolt. Some here may know Im a lefty but the guy wants $250.00 for it. Its got a Tasco scope on it.

At the very least it would be a good loaner up at camp for the price but I cant find much info on the rifle itself. GunBroker does not list any and GunsAmerica has one in .30-06 for $450.00. However it does not match the discrption Ive been told. The GA rifle has white spacers and the tip of the forestock is squared off. Ive asked for pics but the guy is in his mid 60's Im guessing and does not even own a computer.

Sight unseen good deal? worth the risk? Thoughts??

Thanks

If this is the right rifle, it might be a good deal.

If I recall correctly, a friend of mine bought one many years ago. He was one of those guys who would buy anything if he thought he was getting a deal.

IIRC, these were made by Navy Arms and were rather loosely based on the 1903 Sprg. design. I'm sure they are servicable rifles, but not in the class of a modern sporter. HTH...

I should have looked in the book 1st... It credits the manufacturer/importer as Gibbs Rifle Co. which if I am not mistaken is under the auspices of Navy Arms.

The BBofGV states that the Midland 2600 has a stained hardwood stock... the M-2100 has a Walnut stock, the M-2700 is the lwt version, and the M-2800 has a laminated stock. Cals available are: .22/250 Rem, .243 Win. 6mm Rem, 6.5x55, 7x57, 7x64, .30/06, and .308 Win. HTH...

The last Gibbs rifle I saw a few years back was a Springfield
03. Didnt look like a bad rifle at all.

If you're looking for an inexpensive rifle, I think that the Marlin X guns are a very good buy, very likely better than anything that Navy Arms or Gibbs or whatever version of Navy Arms is putting together old military actions.
