I've got a really clean three screw 41 mag with a 6 1/2 in barrel I'm thinking about doing some some customizing to in the future. I'm thinking some case hardening and a bisley hammer and frame. May even cut back the barrel to 5 1/2 or 4 5/8. And upgraded sights. Something like an Keith no. 5. Anyone have some with work done and who did he work?

I've done some DIY stuff to my old pre-warning 7.5" Super Blackhawk,

- cut bbl to 4 5/8" (gunsmith did that)
- steel ejector rod housing
- Belt Mtn locking cyliner pin, Keith style
- Bowen Arms Rough Country rear sight

I have some and most were done by Alan Harton with a couple by Hamilton Bowen. Here's a couple of 44 Special's done on mid-frame 357's for a look at Turnbull case colors, trigger options, etc.

Nothing real fancy, just practical.

An SBH .44 mag 5.5" converted to a Bisly grip frame, ivory polymer grips, trigger job, Belt Mountain base pin:

Back in 2000 when Ruger discontinued the .41 Magnum Bisley I couldn't find one anywhere. Since I really wanted a stainless ayway I had Gary Reeder use a stainless frame and built a 5 shot 5.5" with his Gunfighter gripframe which is just a little different from the Bisley frame.





The barrel and cylinder are much heavier than stock but it will handle any load you want to put in it...

Your ideas of a case hardened frame and Bisley gripframe sound real nice. Since the barrel is being shortened you may want to get a replacent front sight base that will take easily interchangeable blades and Bowen rear sight.

Custom work is great You will find lots of great custom ideas on this forum and on the net. You will go crazy trying o figure out exactly what you want and end up with more than one custom

Another option on a hammer is to trim the SBH hammer profile and thumb pad some. Looks pretty nice and can be done on your own if handy with a file. This Bisley was once a SBH.

1200 fps via 20.5gr H110. That's about the most I care to hang on to, in a handgun.

This .44 mag Super BlackHawk has been customized. The barrel was cut down to 4 5/8" with a Poly rib and a presentation grip by Pachmayr. I carried it in a cross draw rig for two weeks on a bowhunting float trip in Alaska. The only time I took it off was when I was sleeping, but even then it was within reach. When I got back to civilization and packed it away, I could relate to the line from the old western movies "I feel naked without my gun".

Robster do you think a stainless steel Super Black Hawk cut down and made into a Bird's head revolver?

I'm thinking Bird's Head grip.

Cut the barrel to just in front of the ejector rod.

Round down the top strap and put in a sight channel with a new front sight.

I'm looking to the day when I can still shoot but may not be able to rack the slide on my 1911. I don't hunt any more and I already have a good .44 mag Super Black Hawk with a 5&1/2" barrel. I think what I have described would make a good self defense revolver.

Ruger (through Talo) just brought out a nice Super Blackhawk with a 3 3/4" barrel, non fluted cylinder. Throw a birds head on that and you'd have quite a prize. I prefer mine without the birds head but to each his own.

I would try shooting a SBH .44 with a birdshead first I am not big into recoil, and I think that that gripframe might be too much for me. I have heard of them in .45LC but doesn't have the sharp report .44 has for me.

Agree. I do not believe a BH grip frame and anything with any kind of recoil belong with one another.

I would load my .44 mag to .44 Special velocities. Recoil should be a problem.

Still it might be better to just get a .44 Special Ruger. It's just that my Ruger doesn't have the lock.

I can highly recommend Dave Clements for any custom work. He did this .41 Special for me about 12 years ago, working with a flattop that had literally been drug behind a truck down a boulder road - a true basket case gun. It isn't as pretty now as when he finished with it, but I swore it couldn't be the same gun when I opened the box. His metal work was miraculous.

You cannot go wrong with Harton, Bowen, Stroh, Clements (I have or have had pieces from them all) or the Linebaugh's, Huntington, Horvath, Gallagher or Forkin. They all substantially specialize in six (and five) guns and will deliver a top notch product. That said, because they all are at the top of their game, patience will be a virtue as you await delivery which is into years for some. A couple, I believe, are not taking work until they catch up a bit.

this .45 LC Blackhawk had the grip frame replaced with steel, Bowen base pin, action tuned, one piece walnut grips, color case hardened frame and charcoal blued...all work by Turnbull. My favorite outdoors carry gun, in a Threepersons by ElPaso.

I have a set of Lacewood grips being made right now for a .45LC Blackhawk. The wood came off my boat that was lost to a storm, so it they will be sentimental as well as gorgeous. Beautiful wood!

Yep. Here's just a basic 45 Colt on an OM mid-frame. Harton again.

Here's a Blackhawk in .500 JRH that I used to own, built by Jack Huntington. Octagon barrel, fluted 5-shot cylinder, modified grip frame, hard-chrome finish.



My .45 Colt Bisley.......

Bowen customized .44 Special Flat Top. As I get older, the only handgun I truly need.
