Got a few? ??s for you guys. Been reading and trying to study up on elk. Curious about the lingo. What are/is dark timber and drainages? I'm assuming it is pine or aspens and drains are canyons or "hollers" as we say here in KY. Also are there any typical patterns or food sources elk follow? Do they keep the wind at their back or front, lay on north or east slopes, etc.. Any tips would help! Thanks!!!

Good luck to all hunters!!!

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

See the link above me, but aspen is never really associated with dark timber. It refers to thick stands of conifers typically

and the dark timber on the north slope is where elk will typically settle down in the daytime to chew cudd.

An old hunting partner of mine long since gone used to refer to his pickup as a "Unit" only during hunting season. Then after the season closed it turned back into a truck. One of the very first transformers wink

Best one I've heard----"If its steep & thick----And you don't want to go there----That's where the elk are."
