I got a remington 742 my father in law gave me took and shot it yesterday and the trigger has the hardest pull i have ever seen and a lot of creep in it doesnt break good at all. I have no way of checking the poundage on it but would like to get it to 3-3 1/2 pounds. Can these triggers be adjusted by a gunsmith?

I believe that redneck, a GS and poster on the GS forum can help you out.

I don't think they can be adjusted as such but a good smith can hone (carefully) the surfaces and true the moving parts.

You can get parts from Brownells.

Try putting in a weaker spring. It's easy to remove and replace. Just drop the fire control assembly by drifting out the two cross pins in the receiver. You don't have to take anything apart to replace the spring. You'll see it sitting there and removing it is not that hard. Just pay attention to how it's being held in place.

No there are no adjustments in the 742 trigger BUT a GOOD gunsmith can clean up and smooth out the trigger. It is basicly the same trigger as the Rem 1100 shotgun and there are a bunch of old 1100 trap and skeet guns that have had there triggers tuned. It is not a whole lot different than tuning a 1911 or SA trigger.

I had a 742 that I used as a target rifle in Taiwan and the AF armoror was able to clean up the trigger pull.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Well this gunsmith said they didnt want to mess with it. It has a lot of creep in it and is crazy hard to pull

There is a whole lot of difference between "it can't be done" and "I don't want to mess with it". Look for a good gunsmith.

Go down to the Gunsmithing forum here and ask the question.

Timney has a kit for the 750. Call them to see if it will fit this also.

A good gunsmith can do wonders just by working on the hammer and sear engagement.
