Who has one. What velocities are you getting with what bullet weight. Thinking of building one instead of a 338-06.

Interesting but wouldn't a 9.3x62 be just as effective and much less expensive?

Not exactly, but I have been playing with a 375 Hawk/Scovill with a 22" Douglas on a mil 98.

235 Woodleigh - 2815
250 Swift AF - 2520
260 NP - 2558
260 AB - 2628
300 NP - 2423
300 AS MONO RN - 2427

These were all with H4895 or R15.

I had a 375-06 AI. 23" tube. 250 BBC's at around 2700. Today if it must be a 375 bore then get a 376 Steyr or a 375-338 or 375 H&H. If you want a small case then the 9.3x62 is a better choice. The Steyr work well from a feeding standpoint in pre-64 M70's. Might be ok in Mauser 98's. If you have a M700 then get a 375 H&H and load it down.

I had a .375 Whelen Improved for a number of years built on a commercial Mauser action. My velocities were somewhat lower than those stated by others. Seems I got about just under 2,400 fps with a 270 grain Hornady Spire Point, though it was very accurate. With a 300 grain bullet, I never quite broke 2,200 fps. As I look back now, I wonder if bullet expansion would have been sufficient for humane kills on elk at 250 - 300 yards.

There's an old article in HANDLOADER #119 (Jan. 1986) with load data; they reprinted the article in Wolfe's "Wildcat Cartridges Vol.II".

Don't have one in a standard chamber but have a custom SSK barrel for the T/C TCR in .375/06 JDJ, which is a blown-out .375/06 with a very short neck. Performance is similar to the Hawk or "Improved".

The Hawk or Gibbs or JDJ all have about 10% more case capacity than a regular .375-06. If you necked up the 9.63x62 you would get the same+/- results as the Hawk and that is exactly what the designers started out to do.

I use my Hawk primarely with 235's. Speer for deer and TSX for bigger stuff. It works REALLY well .

I had a Mauser chambered in .375-284, fun little rifle.

Really, like my 9.3x62, so sent it down the road.

I'd go with the 9.3x62 instead.

I've always thought of having one built, but I'd AI it to give it a bit more of a sharp shoulder, with a 25" barrel and a 14" LOP it would be a nice balancing and very effective shooting iron.

To All,

I'm planning to have my "Africa rifle" built in .375 Whelen Improved on a Remington 700LH action in a BDL stock.
(24"heavy sporter barrel)
I figure that it's all the "heavy" rifle that I'll ever need and with the 270Grain PJSP by Hornaday or Speer the .375 is a better KILLER than the 9.3x62mm out to 300M.
(For the "Africa trip", I'll also load some cast 255grain loads for "smaller game" to about equal the old "super speed" 38-55 load. Out to 150M, the .38-55 is "a killer" on WT-size game.)

yours, sw

You trade the ability to shoot factory ammunition so you can shoot a .009" larger bullet 25 fps faster. Bad trade.

Only case I can see of this being a good idea is if you need a minimum .375 bore diameter. In which case I'd do a 9.5x62.

I have a 338-06 and am really pleased with it so far. I looked into the 35 whelen and 375 whelen (375-06) and decided on the 338 based on BC and 300+ yard energy numbers. Granted I will never take the gun to Africa. Many who build the 375-06 have issues with the shoulder being so small since this is where the case seats. I think any issues there can be over overcome with quality dies and barrel.

The 9.3x62 has an extra ten thou in the shoulder for headspacing, and about 8% more powder.
