Since there seemed to be an interest in my other thread for custom rifles, I thought I would tell you about the plains game rifle i have ordered.

I spesifically wanted to capture the pre-WW1 Rigby era...
It will be a working rifle in the rigby style with the famous .275 Rigby cartridge.
This project uses a brand new FZH left hand Mauser 98 action.
Furthermore it will have a H&H side mount with a Kahles KXi 3.5-10x50 illuminated 4-dot on top.

"Dear Axel,

Your .275 has started and we are in the last stage of the action reshaping and finishing.
We have discarded the too heavy FZH magazine and we have replaced it with an original pre-war Oberndorf one.
Dont worry about the stock shape as we have at least five pre-war Rigby rifles on the rack...!
We havent yet chosen the wood blank, preferring to complete the metal work first.
I will return to you with some photos asap.

All the best."

Please note that the pictured rifle is not mine, but simply a showcase to present the stock shape.

Here are some actual pictures of the process:

Will do! I went for the H&H style sidemount because It just seemed correct for such an era-rifle. Let me tell you that mount isnt cheap, my VISA card is sobbing relentlessly after that last invoice!

But as the saying goes, buy once - cry once.

Axel: Is Doreleac a French or Belgian gun maker? Who is "FZH" who made (makes) the Mauser action?

The metal is lovely....good luck with your project.I'm certain it will be splendid!

Beautiful!

I prefer ".275 Rigby" to "7 x 57". Way cooler name.

Is the metal CM for bluing?

Are you going to have the same engraving?

It does look like a truly amazing foundation. I saw models on the D&D website that used case colored receivers.

Beutiful!!

The only thing I would change would be to not use a sidemount. I am not familiar with the H&H sidemount but I did have a prewar Winchester 70 with a G&H sidemount on it, it was a true work of art and looked good but it also made the gun heavier than needed and for me upset the balance of the rifle.

But it is your rifle and your money and you should have it just exactly like you want it.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

That rifle is GORGEOUS! And the right chambering! laugh

I'm fantasizing here, and not knocking anyones taste, cause that rifle is pure class...but I'd opt for an English Red pad...just me.

I certainly hope the rifle will be hunted and not merely admired.

The request is noted Ingwe, we`ll see about the red pad!
I will hunt the [bleep] out of it, dont worry about that! Mostly with open sights to boot!

What about a leather covered pad? That would be ever so much cooler than a synthetic pad of any color.

What is the purpose of the stud that sticks down below the barrel? It looks almost like a secondary recoil lug, but that would not be needed on .275.

I might be tempted to skip the sidemount.

By the way, axel, this is my low budget attempt to build a LH mauser.
One lesson I learned is that if you want to use mostly open sights, make sure there is enough drop in the stock.

[Linked Image]

I tried to achieve a traditional American aesthetic (1930's era, G&H influenced 35 Whelen), and used a sidemounted peep sight that can be removed to use the scope. But the stock is too straight to work really well with the open sights. I really have to mash my cheek down into the stock to get my eye aligned with the peep. But the primary use is the with the scope, so that is ok.

Man oh man,
that is one awesome true left hand mauser. I thought I was alone in this world when it comes to obsessing about mausers and being a true leftie - now I feel like Will Smith in I AM LEGEND lol..

Re: the drop - yeah it will be built to rigby specs pre-1910.
Loads of drop in the stock. The sidemount will be carried in a pouch and mounted only for longer shots.

It will primarily be an open sights rifle, but I want to hunt sheep sometime and getting within 100 meters of them - well lets see about that one...

Im curious about your specs! Where did you get it bought, and what action is it?

I will see if I can find out what the recoil lug is, I have no clue!

I want to shift to PM with you, axel, so the emphasis of this thread stays on your rifle and not mine.
