I have a Stiller WSM action, stock, trigger and the Mike Rock barrel on the way and really want a 6.5 SAUM. Does anyone have any experience with this round and know how hard the dies would be to get my hands on? Thanks

Wouldn't that be like a 6.5x284? Or very close? O_C

No. Much quicker then the 6.5-284. A guy at our 1000yd range runs a 6.5 SAUM.

Brad is running 139gr Scenars @ 3300fps.

Still smokin'

That would be a fantastic hunting round in my neck of the woods. Also make a great mountain rifle cartridge too.

Redding will make any dies you need as long as you have a cartridge diagram, but you said the action you have is for a WSM, which has a longer body with a different shoulder angle and shorter neck length than the SAUM, so it'd be a much better idea to make a 6.5 WSM, because with a SAUM in that action you'd have a real good chance of case rupture and many other problems.

It looks like the OP has anew unchambered barrel, so no concerns there. The SAUM gives you more bullet seating latitude than the WSM in a SA

There's a couple guys on sniperhide running 7SAUMs on a long action shooting 180 Bergers out past a mile... that seems to me like an ideal setup! Major latitude with the sleek pills.

Dies are no problem. A Redding type S full length bushing die lets you size down from 7saum. Redding #77280. Easy as pie.
OAL approaches 3 inches, depending on the bullet and whatever reamer you spec.
140 partitions do best for me at 3100. I got up to 3200 but the 3100 was best. H1000.
140 Berger vlds like to go about 3180.

I want to jump in here not because of any expertise but because of interest.

I have long been interested in a short action 6.5 but the 260 Remington, 6.5 creedmoor, 260 AI etc. have left me a little short of my long range goals and performance. I always have liked the the 264 win mag but again wanted a short action. That left me to the 6.5 WSM which by most accounts like the 264 win mag is a barrel eater and the limitations of magazine length for heavier vld bullets.

I don't know why I never thought of the 6.5 saum which in a 700 action should allow enough length for vlds, but I still question the life expectancy of the barrel especially at the 3200+ fps range.

So, this leads me to another thought. The standard mark of most 6.5 X 284 shooters for optimum performance has been 2900 fps. So, why? or why not? or what if you would down load the 6.5 saum to the 3000 fps minus range? Could this give better barrel life with plenty of long range performance.

I never ever considered long barrel life as part of the deal.
Most any 130 or 140 6.5 bullet seated so it's base is above the neck/ shoulder angle won't fit in a 2.80 magazine box.
The 25 saum just barely fits with a 115 bt, and won't fit with a Berger.
I put the 6.5 in an old 7mag 700. A straight .264 would have been simpler. Shove 60+ grains of powder thru a 6.5 hole and I'd quess torching out a throat is going to happen no matter the shape of the case.
I've sort of lost my infatuation with short actions and fat cases. All that I own have long thick barrels anyway. AND,,,, you get to buy a special reamer too, that you probably won't ever use again, except when you have to set the barrel back after a few hundred rounds.

I don't think a 6.5x284 with a vld will fit in a short 700 mag box either.

Thanks for the comments. The 6.5 x 284 definatley won't fit the Remington short action. I know wyatts outdoors make a box magazine that extends the mag length in remington sa's from 2.95 to 3.06 so was thinking That could get me a 6.5 saum with 139's 140 vld's to box feed.

3.035 oal with 140 Bergers. The .264 dia. part of the base is still just above the shoulder.
I started at 56/ H1000 and Fed 215
High 2710
Low 2682
ES 28
average 2694
SD 14

I true up 7saum brass with a sinclair uniformer and lightly turn.
then neck it down to .295 more or less, in two steps. That gives me a neck ID of 262 or so. Some of the brass varies in neck thickness, but most of that is taken care of with that first turn at 7mm.
If you just can't talk yourself out of it PTG has the reamer print.

That reamer was ordered for 140 Bergers. When I tried partitions and Accubonds I was reminded that they have longer bearing surfaces and must be seated deeper to keep them out of the lands.

The Bergers sure slice thru the wind. Noslers give up about 1.5 moa elevation way out there.
email for further details if you need them.

Check with Wyatts, they do not make a 700 s/a box that will get you to 3.06".it's 2.99" .3.07" is the overall length of the box.inside it's 2.995(from the Wyatt website)I just had one installed in a new 6.5RM. Monashee

I've shot the 6.5-284 in a 700 short action with wyatts box.

It works for vlds no problem. But, after two years I started having problems with the center feed. I think the regular Rem follower will work just fine with the box.
