Ran across a latter model 760 in 35 remington today. It is a mid to late 70's gun in about 90% condition I'd say. I need it like a hole in the head but it did intrigue me an bit. I think I can pick it up fairly reasonably. What would be a good price on this gun? Plus if you know much about them care to share your experience? Thanks

I can get a nice one here in Canada for $350. Almost bought it today.
35Rem in a 760 is good as they will take hotter loads than a 336 and you can use pointy bullets.

I bought one at a garage sale sveral years ago. It was to be traiding material but it was so damn accurate I kept it. Factory ammo runs slow around 1890 fps. A case full (lightly compressed) of 3031 will give 2250 with a 200 gr bullet.

That pump 35 Rem is PRIME for making a 35 Whelen.
I had a reputable smith ream the chamber of one several yrs ago.
I brought him a dummy round with the bullet seated where I wanted and he did a GREAT job.
Something to chew on.

The 35 Rem is about as good as it gets in the thick brush and at woods range the 35 Whelen doesn't really have anything on it. I personally would leave and 760 in the 35 Rem just like it came from the factory other than installing a good set of receiver sights
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

There were no 760s made in .35 Rem. form 1958 till 1980 . if the one you're looking at has the latest version of 760 wood with the short action tube , it was made in 1980 . Around here , in excellent condition , they go for $500.00 . I have a .358 Win. made from one of them . If you can get it for $300.00 it's a steal !

The Whelen only starts out faster with better bullets and WAY out shoots the 35 Rem at distance. That's all.

Really ? My point is he 'could' make it a Whelen with little expense. It would be the same rifle, not longer nor heavier (slightly lighter) and stronger from start to finish.

Yup, really! My point is he 'could' make it a Whelen with little expense. Or .... if all you needed was a short range bush gun for deer, why bother? If you REALLY need a bigger/heavier/faster 35cal, why stop at the Whelen? Why not build a 358Norma or STA?

I would consider a 760 in .35R a near perfect thick woods & brush gun, only bettered by a 760 carbine in .35R At those ranges I don't see a .35 whelen doing anything better except kick a lot harder

Intelligent thing to do is leave it original so you can make some money on it when it is time to sell it. It will work fine for what the op wants. Any doubt about that ,buy one in 35 Whelen and load it down to 35Rem levels and have both by changing loads. Magnum Man " It's a lot easier to ride a fast horse slow than a slow horse fast"

I paid 375 for the last one I had with a corn cob forend. I think it was a 50's model and it shot really well.
I let a friend talk me out of it a few years back, but it was a dandy.

Ernie The .270,.280,.30-06., .35 Whelen mag works much better in my 760 .35 Rem than the .35 Rem mag that came with it does. But I may have one, I'll check.

It is for a friends rifle. The 35 Rem mag is pretty picky about how you load it or it will not feed. I did not know an 06 mag would work. They are not hard to come by. Thanks.

Sorry Magnum Man didn't mean to tie you up in knots ,to post an update I haven't done anything yet. I keep thinking it is a good buy and kind of neat but I keep reminding myself that I already have more rifles than I can hunt with and have about talked myself out of it. I have come to realize that guns are like rabies sometimes you just need to tie yourself to a tree and see if the fever passes. I think this may be one of those times besides there are a couple of other options that I keep thinking about too.
