Clients who've hunted mountain goat up here in Alaska, seem to prefer a lighter weight rifle, other than one which weighs 9.5 pounds. I would recommend a lighter weight rifle, too, when hunting mountain game in Alaska. In terms of caliber, I've seen the best results when clients used ".30-06 class" calibers and other relatively "slow moving yet flat shooting" calibers. A heavy for caliber bullet moving at modest velocity seems to work best and a light-weight firearm is much more portable when negotiating steep terrain and heavy brush, which you'll find plenty of when hunting mountain goats in Alaska.
