Dumb question, but here is my situation. I've been shooting Nosler Trophy 165gr AB factory ammo (2800fps) in my 30-06 for a couple of years. I normally order it as it's not available locally. I recently checked my zero and all was good. I was packing last night (opening day is Thursday) and found I didn't have the spare box I thought I did. I have three rounds on hand. Now, to my question. I know that no one is going to be able to answer this definitively, but what other factory round would fly similar to the AccuBond. I will more than likely have a chance to check the zero but I don't want to spend a lot of time re-zeroing. I don't have time to order the Nosler, but most other ammo is available. Any help is appreciated..

I have found that the Bal. Tips shoot pretty much the same. They don't act the same on big game though.

How far are you planning on shooting? There are certainly some ammo that will be really close at 100. Example is my 7SAUM, I shoot the accubond 140's through it. I loaded some 160 matchkings and they were only an inch low, at 100 yards, no big deal. But you take that same comparison out to like 300 or 400 they are at least going to be 3 or 4 inches off, and I would bet more do to weight change, BC difference etc. If it were me in this pinch, I would go to a store and buy 1 or 2 types of 165's and go try them. They should be pretty close, and while I was there you should be able to get it sited in in just a couple shots.

as already stated I would look for some federal premium with the 165 grain ballistic tip.

Something with a 165gr Nosler ballistic tip bullet should be close.
When used with the same components other than the bullet they shoot to pretty much the same POI.
It's also a tougher bullet than some attest to..............
Good Luck,
Ted smile

All of you guys type faster than I do shocked smile

I would say ballistic tips as well. Remington's Scirocco brand I believe loads an accubond or some polymer tipped Trophy Bonded. I've had good luck with those and would give those a try, may be a dead ringer.

Excellent info. I plan to stay within 200 yards. This is the reason I plan to start reloading!

Something to ask yourself-
What's my honest shooting history like? Am I a 1 shot kill guy or a magazine-full guy? Be honest. A cool head, one-shot killer with three bullets is good to go with the following qualification.
You might pick up something as a backup plan and if you find yourself in a tight spot while hunting, say needing a finishing shot, you can have the extra ammo available. Even cool heads make mistakes or have problems occasionally, but a REALLY cool head takes one shot, 1 kill. Assess your competence and confidence level, factored in with the distance from home, importance of hunt, and effort required to hunt this particular time, etc. This post will be met with skepticism but this is what I would do. I would NEVER assume one ammo will shoot where another does without testing. I'd have to be in a desperate situation to shoot ammo I'd never tested, like a finishing shot scenario, never across a canyon!

Every one has a different opinion--but I'll give ya mine anyway! Store bought--Federal Premium 165gr Ballistic tips will give anything you shoot with them--a dirt nap right now--period. I'm a 30.06 nut, always have been, and the afore mentioned cartridge has NEVER failed me. Thats my story, and I'm stickin to it.

That is exactly what I was asking, this ammo will be for a backup. I have two tags, may buy a couple more. I won't assume they will shoot the same either, just looking for a general consensus on what would make sense to get in case I need it.

Look at something with the Hornady SST bullets. They have very similar B.C. and profile to the AB.

I agree with Fireball, I hunt with the same 4 bullets all year, unless I kill a deer, then I will have 3 bullets

Listed velocity on the 165 Part. from Federal is 2830. The NBT vel is listed at 2800. I would re zero with the new ammo and use the other 3 as backups. Inside 200 as you state, I doubt there would be a big difference in POI but stranger things have happened. Re zero with new ammo and go hunting.

Just for the record, I hunt with a box of 50 bullets! Try to shoot just one at game though. smile
