Hey guys,
I have a nice Winchester Model 70 Ranger in 30-06. The stock is a little dinged up and rinky dink. Is there a lighter, synthetic stock I can put on it?

Yes.
Look at the various McMillan models, particularly the EDGE models, if you want top quality.
B&C makes much less expensive stocks but, while OK, they don't hold a candle to a McMillan.
Buy your McMillan through Rick Bin the owner of this site.

Since this gun appears to have a lightweight barrel, How do I know which one to order?

If it's a factory barrel just tell Rick Bin what you have and McMillan will make the stock fit like a glove. If the barrel is aftermarket then you may need to take some measurements. Either way McMillan can do just about anything you'd like.

Winchester stocks will come in Featherweight, Standard and heavy. You have a standard. Order pretty much any hunting stock you want and it SHOULD fit, some minor tweeks might be required but not likely too much work. Like mentioned, Micky's are nice, but expensive. B&C are nice too, especially for the money. Just stay away from Ramline, they're junk. B&C makes an Ultralight Medalist which is the same stock as the Winchester Extreme Weather stock, its about 225$ and isn't too heavy and it has an aluminum bedding block. HS Precision will be about 350$, Brown Precision will be 500-800, McMillan 500-600, Manners 600-700.
HOWEVER, you have to specify that you are using a Ranger, and either find or order a stock that specifically states blind magazine. Win 70's are all pretty much the same, minus the bottom metal. You'll see blind mag (Rangers, 670's and 70A's) 2pc bottom and 1 pc bottom. Most of the better stocks are made for the 1pc bottom metal, which your rifle does not have. Stockys stocks is making bottom metal now for 150$, you can also buy bottom metal from midway and brownells. 1pc bottom metal stocks are drop in fits for late model New Haven made rifles and the rifles made currently by FN. 2pc are from 1964 to about 2000, from New Haven (where your gun was made). You can also buy spacers or adjust fitment for 2pc rifles into 1pc stocks, if you want to go the very cheap route and buy used 2pc bottom metal off the internet IF you cannot find a blind mag stock you want.

My McMillans cost $438 for a standard construction swirly and $518 for an EDGE.
To me that's a bargain price for the quality inherent in a McMillan.

Just going off memory from Stockys and McMillan, I thought they were just a hair more expensive. Of course that was also for "in stock" stocks without the 4 months wait lol

I think mine is a late model. It has a very thin barrel and a a floor plate for the magazine.

I've got a ranger '06 with a 22" featherweight contour sitting in a McMillan Winlite stock. Makes for a lightweight but balanced rig.

For about $518+ shipping you can get any McMillan edge stock design made for a Featherweight barrel. There are several stock styles that will work. The McMillan will simply drop in. You could glass bed if you want. I've a couple of rifles in Edge stocks and like them a lot. If you don't want to spend that much money one of these, www.hightech-specialties.com will run $290+ shipping. It will require some minor final fitting, cutting to the correct LOP, glueing on a recoil pad and painting. If you are at all handy with tools it is not hard. I recommend using a flip-flop recoil pad to save weight and money. About $2 and 1/2 oz for a Walmart flip flop vs $30 and 6 oz. for a real recoil pad. I've done a couple and was pleased with the results. Mine were not as professionally finished and that would bother a lot of guys, but for a lightweight working rifle on a budget it is an option.

All Rangers with floorplates in non-magnum chamberings had the featherweight barrel contour.
Youth Rangers with blind magazine had featherweight contour also.

Yes, a stock for a standard Featherweight will fit, so long as you have a floorplate model Ranger.
