I had a couple with nice wood, but that would not offset the poor accuracy. Sold them.

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but I just bought a #1 about a month ago and last week I put ten rounds through this baby. Chambered in .405 Winchester.

DrDeath; A late shooting mentor of mine had about a dozen early No. 1's, many with very nicely figured butt stocks. We weren't so digital back then in those days and I never thought to take photos of them somehow. For a number of years this was my saddle gun when I was hunting, an '82 vintage in .300 Win Mag. I installed a Moyer's trigger in it, added a Gentry barrel band and then made up a fore end the way I thought it should look and feel. It served me faithfully for many years, but as we got out of horses a couple years ago I didn't take it out much anymore. When a friend of our neighbor's offered me a fair price for it I sold it to help offset the cost of our eldest daughter's electric drum kit. Anyway, someday I might play with another No. 1 as I found a lot to like about them. Thanks for the thread and thanks to those who have posted photos already or still might. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Regards, Dwayne

Dwayne,
Nice job on the foreend! Did you use the factory wood and just slim it down?

Dwayne, My sympathies. Years ago I bought my son a set of electric drums. One of the purchases that I had mixed feelings about. It made my son happy, which I was glad about, but I didn't like wearing hearing protection in the house. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you. Norm

Thanks for this awesome thread. Tex, I really like the picture of the 30/40 Krag and the buck. My 405 win No.1 is my favorite. It's amazing how accurate the 405 win is.

Get one, you'll likely be happy with accuracy. I haven't heard much bad about the recent ones. My 2005 '06 shoots great and looks it too. I gotta figure out posting pics here.

Dr. Death - that .458 sold for about $600 as I recall. Was hard to generate interest in it here locally.

Thanks Doc, it's a shooter too. I have a load for a 300 grain Barnes at 2800FPS that will shoot 1 inch at 100yards. One of these days there is going to be a big brownie on the receiving end! I also had a better pad put on there so it fits better.

They do have some fine wood, but I really wish they would do a better job of fitting wood to metal. Pretty poor in that department. Fortunately, they typically leave the wood proud, so the issue can be rectifed in most instances.
I was fortunate enough to acquire a Shiloh Sharps a few years ago. For a production company, they do the finest wood/metal marriage this side of the Atlantic.

I certainly lucked out, ordering sight unseen. That's the problem with #1s, you might win the wood lottery or you might not. It doesn't seem like there's much inbetween. Has anyone ever complained and asked for replacement?

Not long ago, one of the guys on this forum got a 1-S-C, .45-70 Govt. with the 26" BBL. and the wood on it was fantastic. Most of the Boddington's were plain jane, but occasionally you got a great one. This one has gone down the road. .375 RUGER Medium Sporter Lion. 2nd from the right. L to R .204 Ruger AB .30-06 2006 Anniv .25-06 AH (Ho-hum Circassian) 6.5 X 55 K1-A .375 RUGER Boddington Lion 9.3 X 74R Med. Sport.

Dr Death, thanks and if I decide I'll let you know. Then again, I'd let my AH go before I let this one go. It became quite sentimental this Christmas when I used it on a hunt with my older brother. We both shot a doe that evening. We hadn't seen one another in over 30 years.

A little off topic on the #1 wood theme-
I know nothing about the 7x64 round. What's it good for? Is it a heavy recoiling round ? Is ammo cheap? Etc etc..

The 7X64 Brenneke is like a 280 but a little hotter. I have a 7X64 M98 Custom & a 7X65R the rimmed version in a Simson Drilling. Chuck Hawkes has a great write up on it.

I love my RSI '06. It points and carries like a bird gun and shoots sub moa. I had a Trop safety put on it and the trigger cleaned up and set at 3.5 lbs. I can't think of a more perfect rifle. I have some pics but she's plain jane as far as the wood goes. That and I haven't taken the time to figure out posting on here with my iMac. I hear it's paramount to know how to do this or it never happened.....

6-pack,
Tried and it worked. What caliber is your RSI? Fine lookin' rifle.
I should be the proud new owner of a K1-A in .35 Whelen Monday.
I'll post a new spread when I get done with work. (I hate when work gets in the way of my hobby!!)

I just ordered a #1S Medium Sporter in a 45-70 which, should be delivered to my FFL in the next week or so. They are hard to find and I had to order it sight unseen and can only hope the wood will look half a good as some wood pictured in this thread.
Most of the rifles I've bought in the last few years have been for hunting and were stainless steel with composite stocks. I just couldn't order a single shot 45-70 in anything but American walnut and blued steel. It will not be scoped but, I haven't settled on what sights to get if the factory sights don't work for me. Can't wait to get it in and start working up hand loads using hard cast bullets.
Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.

I purchased this rifle from a gentleman here on the 'fire. 1-H in .405 Winchester. Adds close to 1000 Ft. Lbs over a .45-70 Govt.

Which 45-70 Govt? There are some real stomp ass commercial loads that approach 458 Win fps and mag energy output.

1B Mine is a #1S. So far I have mostly shot it with the 300gr TTSX, which was designed for the .458 Socom. The last one I chrono'd, which was not maximum, was running about 2240 fps. That's close to the traditional .405 load Such loads are absolutely, positively, only for strong modern single shots

The 458 WinMag will push a 450 gr TSX just as fast. 460 Weatherby, which SSK can put in a No.1 for you will push the 450 at +-2700 fps, or a 500gr banded solid at +-2600 fps. In any No.1 that would hurt a great deal.
No 45-70 is a 458 WinMag but it is a great black powder cast bullet cartridge.

true, but the .45-70 weighs about 8 lbs, and is a heck of a lot handier than the .458 #1.

Thank You Sillyak,
I love the Boddington's.
I had a Lion, in .375 Ruger, and the light weight and kicking caliber was painful.
My Leopard in 7X57 is more my speed.
The Lion kicked the snot out of me far worse than my 9.3X74R or 416 Rigby.
Love that Matte finish, brighter sights, Circassian walnut, just love them!!
So what do you use the Big Booming Nitro Express for?

It is rather light for its chambering. My scale says 7.4 lbs! I only picked it up a week ago, ran through a few factory rounds and recoil was quite stout. Manageable offhand, but I would not want to shoot it off the bench. Managed to pull of a decent offhand grouping with it though.
I think I'm going to get a mercury recoil reducer and wear a PAST when I shoot it. I plan to see how fast I can get a 500 grain TSX going. 2400 fps should be quite achievable.

They have a C weight barrel, not the D truck axle barrel of the .458 & .416 My .475 Turnbull has a C weight 26" and it's a hair over 9 lbs with a VX3 1.75-5 and Ruger offset rings. I've long wanted a .450, but they usually get sold before I grab them.

Tex,
That makes sense. The "C" weight Bbl. for a .375 H&H Mag. makes them fairly portable, and putting a larger hole down the tube should make for a lighter, handier gun.
Maybe I need one of those myself!!
Very Nice Boddington. (Looks like I have an excuse to keep my eyes open for a .450/.400)!

If you want a .475T in the #1, and see one, best grab it. Turnbull told me less than 100 were made in that caliber!

TX,
Great looking rifle.
The Circassian that Cabella's got on the .30-40 Krag's "A"'s was absolutely outstanding, far better than the average Circassian they used in the Boddington series. I like your choice of glass also.
I wish .30-40 Krag was easier to find ammo/loading components.
I wish they had made that rifle in 6.5 Swede or .260 Rem.
Beauty.
Mitch
