wow, no response?

what kind of competition? There are DOZENS of types of shooting competition and they differ as much as the ball competitions do. IDPA practical pistol is as different from Olympic air rifle as football is different from ..... calligraphy...

I see 2 distinct variations of the sport: precision where you shoot for accuracy and action where you shoot for time.

precision includes all the olympic events, NRA bullseye, highpower and smallbore rifle, F-class as well as benchrest and some hit/miss events like tactical precision rifle, silhouette (steel animals).

Action includes cowboy, practical pistol, IDPA, 3-Gun.

Besides the obvious difference in score and usually (but not always) equipment, the two different types of sport attract and event generate a different personality in the shooter. Precision shooters are slow and careful... focus on the front sight... squeeeeeeeeeeze the trigger.... bang... follow-thru.... repeat... Natural point of aim and breathing are important...
Action shooters are fast and decision.... "standby.... BEEEP...bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang" your stage is over in 12.76 seconds.... wait 45 minutes till the next stage. Fast draw, Fast footwork are as important as a fast trigger.

As a result... the precision sports attract an older, smaller crowd, while the video game generation packs the action events. Our local clubs have 10X the activity on the action ranges.

(not real sure if trap/skeet/clays is really a precision event, even the name "shotgun" suggests otherwise, but I think psychologically its closer to precision).

google for the type of shooting you want to do, maybe google for that word with the name Wisconsin or some large nearby cities and clubs with that sport will pop up. Go out and watch some shoots of the various different disciplines. My experience is that most competition shooters are welcoming to new shooters or shooters new to competition, some incredibly welcoming, like bring your ear & eye protection someone might stick a gun in your hand!

I've shot darn near everything (but never in WI)... post or PM questions.

(I know there is an active group of Long Range (1000 yd) shooters that shoot at Lodi, WI). http://www.wingunclub.org/ it might be.)

welcome to the sport (whatever discipline you choose) shoot good

Look under "Shooting Events" on the left side of this site.
http://www.wi-force.org/
Seems to have most of the active events for Wisconsin, but depending where you are Michigan or Minnesota may be closer for some stuff.. Not much going on now but indoor stuff. What are you interested in doing? Will help narrow down the search.

WI-Force is a good resource. There's a number of indoor leagues going on in Appleton, Fond du Lac, Ripon, etc. Where you're located and what you want to shoot is a big factor.
