I have a 7mm mauser that i love to shoot and ive been thinking of using it for coyote hunting since thats the only centerfire rifle i have and it would be good for shooting across my open fields. does anyone else think its a bit to powerful?

I say if it is safe than give'um hell especially if that is the only rifle you have right now, but if your lookin for a "good" reason for a new one thats a whole new story

There is nothing too powerful when it comes to shooting coyotes, however on the lighter side a .284 115 grain Speer hollow point launched with 48 - 49 grains of IMR 4064 or IMR 4320 @ 3150 fps will take care of your calf killers.

98% of all the coyotes I've killed have been while hunting deer, meaning I shot them with whatever I was using to hunt deer that day. I can assure you that a 7mm mauser will kill a coyote just fine, there's no such thing as too dead.

I shot one with a 150gr Win silver ballistic tip out of my 300WSM one time. It was about 125yds and took a step as I shot. I ended up hitting it a little far back and high. I blew it in half all but about 4-5 inches of skin across the belly. When I got over to the thing its inards were strung everywhere and it was tryin to drag itself off with its front legs. I couldn't believe it!!!! I pulled out my EMP 40 and gave him a double tap to finish him off. Yotes are some tough critters!!!!

120g V max for predators, then switch out to 120g tipped tripple shock for deer.

We used to have BIG GUN hunts for predators in the old days, everyone in the truck brough their big gun. My big gun was a 7 mag or a 270. The 270 loaded with sierra 90g Hp with IMR 3031 or AA2700 is awesome medicine on coyotes, accuracy and speed in the extremes.

To kill them, just shoot the most most accurate rifle you have. I've killed a fair number with .30-06. Met a grey haired man on a snowy ridge above the Wenatchee River one winter who was hunting coyotes with a .340 Weatherby, and everything about him made me think he could shoot it.
He wasn't after fur. laugh

Shot a couple on a deer hunt with the .300 Win Mag and 180 grain Accubonds. One was called in and facing me at 75 yards.

It looked like Adam Vinatieri kicking a 50 yard field goal....

Hit one with a 30-06 once and blew out his shoulder on the other side.

If you are just killing them, I say have fun with it. I will be taking my rifle out after some this month.
