I traded for a HVA 1640 for my 11yo boy. The stock is much too long for him but I am resisting cutting it down because the original stock is pretty nice. These are small ring Mauser type actions with a unique action screw spacing. Much bigger than most SR Mausers and very close to LR Mauser spacing. Do I order a cheap Boyds or Stocky's LR stock and bed the receiver ring to fit or do I try to find a beater HVA stock to cut down? Where might I find a beater HVA stock? Whatever I get it'll just be a temporary stock until the lad gets big enough for the original stock.

It sounds like your boy gets the pleasure of helping to build his own stock

You can have this one for $160 shipped. It's a 1640 (factory tube was 20 1/2" and fairly slender), bottom rifle stock in both pics

Wonderful offer Scott but I'd no sooner cut that stock than the one I have.
Thinking I'll go with one of those $69 Boyds LR stocks. Wouldn't mind hacking one of those up.

My son picked up a lightweight Husky 1640 in 308 with a broken stock. I ordered a Boyds large ring walnut stock for him for his birthday and he has altered the inletting to fit. The most important dimension is the action screws - must get that right. You will need to remove wood under the trigger to make room for the 1640 trigger. This cuts right through the rear cross pin on the stock but thats no biggy, you cant see from the outside. The inletting for the bottom metal will have to be enlarged at the front to allow for the wider Husky bottom metal. And there are a couple of other small alterations, but all of this work is easily done with a little time and possibly a Dremel. And then you will need to bed it. The service from Boyds was excellent, the stock is a nice piece of walnut, and it comes with pillars in the action screw holes. Altogether a very achievable project, have fun, your son now has a lifetime rifle, Cheers, Al

Great info Al and just what I was looking for.
Thanks!
Now, do I keep the 8x57 barrel on it or do I swap it out for the SS tube I have chambered for the .270 Winchester?

A genuine Husky in 8x57! Why would you change it? ..........................................and for a 270! If it was mine I would leave it original, fit a 3x or 4x original steel Weaver in Weaver mounts and hunt it for life. One of the best 98's ever made and such a joy to carry. If your son is younger or smaller, the 8x57 can be downloaded and when you change it back to the original stock, reload to its full potential. Which is a lot more than most reloading manuals. I had a vz33 in 8x57 for many years that I used for most of my hunting, I shot plenty of animals and some were good bull tahr in excess of 300 yards. The Norma PPC projectile worked well for me, I think they now call it the Vulcan. Cheers, Al

You're right of course on the chambering.
I'm thinking the rather anemic US factory loads for the 8x57 should serve the boy well as the recoil will be mild. I'm set up to reload for the cartridge as the boy gets older (he's 11 now and 100 pounds) and more accustomed to recoil.

I believe I would take a long look at purchasing Scott's stock and shortening it to fit the young man. The lines of a 1640 stock are what makes them such a beautiful looking rifle as far as I am concerned..... and it would likely balance much better to boot.

Is that the same model as the S&W Mod B branded and the JC Higgings 51-L? I have both of those and look at them as one of the first really light weights on the market. The S&W is a 308 and the 51-L is 243. Steelhead has a nice looking pair

Pretty sure the S&W is but not sure about the Higgins.
