Hello all and Happy Holidays!

Take a look at this link...(below) Then watch the movie Pilot...(about 5 min.) then reach in your pocket and dig through the lint, gum wrappers and toothpicks and un-crumple that dollar and grab the change. Then please send it to these young men...
These young men are embarking on a journey of a life time. The really cool thing for my wife and I is the fact they will be borrowing 2 of our animals to make the trip. Our Wild BLM Mustang "Daisy" and our Wild BLM Mule "Bob"... so find a buck or 2 even some spare pocket change...

Please tell all your horse people to do the same...

If you do let me say thanks!

ha!..

Yup,, Bob is broke to pack anything.. and Daisy will do it all.

She's lined out so well solid the cinema-photographer will ride her most of the way. I guess they trust her enough to handle him and the $$$$$ camera equipment. HA!

The greatest threat to any backcountry horse trip is a buck off in the middle of nowhere. Any equine will do as long it is broke, broke and broke.

These guys are from Texas and I wish them all the best in the big mountains.

I had a conversation with Georgie Sicking a couple of years ago. She used to gather mustangs, wild burros, and swore that there was a whole herd of wild mules in So AZ back in the 1960s. She told me a story one day when they had no grocery money. They went out and found a flatbed full of wild burros. They got $2.50 a head and went down to the store and bought grub.

Unfortunately there is a difference between wrangling dudes and traveling thousands of miles on your own. Sometimes ambitious trips are only undertaken by those that don't have the experience to know what they are signing up for. I wish these guys all the best in their endeavors. I apologize for my prejudice against those from Texas. I used to live in Colorado.

Green?

Are you meaning "new" pack saddles or the adjustable bar type?

It is a lot more dignified to travel in the mountains with a sawbuck or a Decker with canvas and a few hitches like a diamond and a box hitch.

Well I wish them luck. Would be a cool trip. And if it's made into a movie, I'll watch it.

I can't stand the whole "Wild" horse situation though. Most are feral horses that horse people have given romance too. I can't imagine saying that they are good stock. Tough? Yes.

I hope these guys really are experienced. The fact that they are so keen on mustangs makes me think they are part of the crazy horse people culture and most of that crowd are a skoosh out of their element when not in a clinic. And a bunch in that teaser film confirms my suspicions.

Dignified?

What does that mean?

If they're looking for financing, they oughta contact Robert Redford. He is a big "wild horse" lover and he might finance the entire filming and expedition. He has millions of $$$$ and one half million wouldn't even make a dent in his assets.

Well if you have read any of my previous posts, its no secret how I feel about "wild horses". I think a maggot has more credible use than an inbred "mustang".

That being said, these seem like good kids and I wish them the best. It would be a hell of a good trip to make. IF YOU WERE BETTER MOUNTED.

Dignified means having some self-respect. Personally I would never go on a long pack trip with a bunch of plastic equipment made for newbies. Have enough respect for the noble art to learn the traditional way of doing things.

We have a lot mustangs in Nevada, more than any other state and they have come a long way. Many herds like the Pryor Mtns, MT and the Red Desert Herd, WY are known for quality stock. Ranchers turned loose their stud horses in the winter to run with the wild horses around here. Mustangs have stamina, self-preservation and good feet. They are being trained for many kinds of work and many go to the US Border Patrol from the prison in Carson City. Mustangs have never been bred for color, big feet, a big hip or any other fashionable trend. Many are cowy. My thinking has changed completely in the last 30 years and I am now a fan of the mustangs that show up everywhere.

I worked at the Nevada Test Site, north of Las Vegas, from 1969 thru 1992.There were probbaly 100 head of horses there. Obviously there were no turned out studs since the test site can only be entered if you have a security clearance or are escorted.
Probably the sorriest looking horse I have ever seen. One thing though, they survive very well in that desert country and I never saw a skinny one.
