A friend of mine has access to a ranch in TX in the MLD program. He informed me it was time to do some doe culling, in which the proceeds were donated to the TX Hunters for The Hungry program. I thought it would be fun to prove up something I learned here on the 'fire......that a 7-08 and 120NBT are a deadly combo. They are. All one shot kills, all exited, and relatively easy shots from 100-300 yards but not much wind at all to deal with, and had dead rest off the truck or sticks most times. He let me do the shooting.....17 was the final count.

17 exits sounds pretty good. You really should have wiggled down in there amongst them for the photo so that only your head, shoulders, and rifle were visible. (grin)

JG,

Did you hit shoulder with any of them? Or were they all double lung/behind the shoulder shots?

Travis. Between my wife, niece and myself we probably have killed 30 deer in the last 5 yrs with this combo. I can't remember many of the shot placements but a few were definitely shoulder shot. Can't say if both shoulders but for sure 1 and yes blew right threw and exited.

Hey Trav, I'm a helluva shot......no shoulders. smile Actually with dead rests like I had it was so easy JeffO could have done it. I should have, just to see what gives I guess but I wasn't smart enough to think about that at the time......I was going apesschittt at all the targets available so my mind was preoccupied!

Seriously, mostly broadside, a few quartering to or away so a shoulder or two got whacked on the way out, not going in.

RT and JG,

Thanks for the info. I am a fan of the 120 gr. BT. But I did have one not exit two seasons back and it has left me wondering if it was a fluke, or if perhaps Nosler changed things. Mine did contact bone, but I was still surprised as it was a sub-100yd shot.

Still a great bullet. I was just curious.

WOW - LOL.... you always hear of someone shooting a truckload of this or a truckload of that.... but this is the first time I've actually see a picture!

I think I'll have to give those 120 BT's a try!

How fast was it going (guesstimate) on impact?

I'd prolly forget about the shoulders to when you have a chance to supply meat to those in need! That would be alot of fun!!!

120 grain BT impacted on a buck at over 3000 fps out of my 7mm-08.

Found under the far skin took lot of bone out!

Was under 100 yds. They start out around 2,900-3,000fps in that rifle. So whatever that computes to.

Does the 140 have a thick jacket like the 120 or no?

Those 120BTs and the 140BTs will not kill anything. You need to find another bullet to use. You can think me later.

After reading this thread, I decided to section the 140 and the 120. I know this has been done several times. Both newish bullets bought in the last few months. The jacket may appear a little thicker on the 120 closer to the tip? The core shape looks a little stouter on the 140? I don't have any 150's to compare or I would have done it too. I can't tell much difference...

Have found the 140nbt to be rather explosive on shots that contact heavy bone.

Can't argue with that. I shot exactly one deer with the combo at what was probably north of 3k at impact. Bullet came unglued and left me far from impressed, but I seem to be the only one.

If Im running a 140gr .284 diameter bullet it will be the NAB. But in 7-08 the 120NBT is a wicked lil bastid. Found its performance to be real similar to the NAB. Did a little more damage to shoulder where it impacted but stayed together and tried to exit. Recoil is nil on the 120. The 140 NBT does too much damage on shoulder shots. So I stay away from them.

Culling does on a good ranch is almost as much fun as culling axis deer with a spot light.
