That's the way it goes. Quit drinking and they all start plotting against you. That's all right,Dave. Hang in there.

our alfalfa is 8" tall and the trees are starting to bud and put on some leaves too, I reckon spring is here for real this time.

woke up this morning to my right eye crusted shut and swollen. I think I caught the pinkeye that was going around. I promised to take little man turkey hunting cause tomorrow is the last day, so I drove with one eye to the ranch. hunted an hour and saw a young jake, I figured I might as well take him. hard to see through the scope with the bad eye, but at 200 yards the 243 dumped him like a fat prom date. the boy was sure pumped and can't stop talking about it. not a bad day smile

Sure would be nice if we could use rifles on turkeys here in WI.

Here in South Carolina we can only use shotguns on turkey.

it's kinda like cheating I admit. all you have to do is get a gobble to locate them, then get within 300 yards. I was gonna use my .22 hornet, but I sold the scope a couple weeks back and haven't replaced it yet. out here you can't use a rifle or bow to shoot turkeys in the ditch, you have to use a shotgun.

Tom, you can't hunt turkeys with a rifle here, but you CAN hunt pheasants with a .22 rimfire if wish. Come on down and try it if you want.

Turkeys with a centerifle seems hardly sporting to me in the Midwest - maybe it would be okay the western states, but here, it seems mighty easy. .22 rimfire might be sort of sporting I suppose.

We're talkiing head shots with a rifle, correct? Body shots would be to easy and waste a lot of meet.

Put down the first mosquito of the season. Anyone have any good squeeter recipes.

Agree Brent. I don't want to shoot them with a rifle.

I'm not hardly good enough to smack a pheasant with a .22

I shot mine in the body, spine shot with clipping the wing. didn't waste any meat since I just breast them and take the legs/thighs. I agree, it isn't hard to shoot one, but with the season closing tomorrow and hunting with a 4 year old, it was the only way to efficiently fill my tag. the boy had a blast, and if he hadn't wanted to go i would have just let my tag lapse and not given it a second thought.

and it was a monster 14 lb jake, lol. Little man thought it was godzilla and was super proud. I guess you could call it a successful hunt?

Apparently, the .22 pheasant thing is a hold over from walking and driving the gravels shooting birds for the pot. A decade ago, they tried to make it illegal but ran into a small bunch of angry road hunters that apparently still did it. Never seen anyone try it here, but road hunting for birds with shotguns is legal and not uncommon.

I saw a huge bird this morning less than a mile from my place. I'm tagged out so I wasn't about to go after him but if he survives through tomorrow, he might decide to move up here for next year. We rarely have turkeys on the property for some reason.

I used to hunt shelter belts for pheasants with a .22 in MN, spot and stalk within 80 yards and plink em. only ever got a handful over the years, but it was fun late winter.

after I shot the jake I drove by a quarry I had permission to hunt and saw 4 big toms strutting in the open field, such is the luck. looks like I'll have to wait until antelope season now to shoot something besides paper.
