I have a Savage 110 E in 308 Win. I am trying to get a new tupperwear stock for it because the wooden one is badly warped. I have been asked if it is a short or long action. How do I know ? FWIW this is a factory rifle with no custom metal, barrel or wood.

go by the distance between the two action screws, 4.25", 4.5", 5.0"

You probably have one of the "first generation" short actions at 4.5" screw spacing. Boyd's offers all sizes, including the newer 4.4"

Thanks very much for your informative reply. My Savage is 4.5 inches between the two screws. When I buy a stock do I ask for a short, medium or long action ?

Whats the serial range?

Savage didn't go to a short action till up in the late 80's, I believe everything before that was just considered a long action.

I know my 110 in 7mm-08 is based on a long action receiver yet it's a short action caliber.

Serial number range is C369xxx and the distance between action screws is 4.5 inches.

Hmmm, did you know that your gun was rebarreled at some time?

Made in 1977 but it wasn't offered in 308 in 1977.

It's a long action, 4.5 c-c.

Why tupperware? Ever think of getting a Boyds stock?

I'm not sure if anyone offers a plastic stock for the 4.5" intermediate action (boyds offers laminated wood for those). I modified a 4.4" stock to work, using aluminum pillars, but it's not what you'd call "musuem quality", and it was a lot of futzing around.

The action is a 4.5 inch action which Boyds calls intermediate length. I have looked at Boyds on line and cannot find a intermediate length action, finished, right hand, in their classic style. I must be missing something. They seem to have bookoo (that's a technical term for "lots of") of thumbhole stocks and stocks for seemingly everything else, both fininished and unfinished but nothing finished for the simple 110 in their classic, right hand version. I have e-mailed them to see if it is available.
