Thanks, Poobah!! I am very much looking forward to this hunt. I have to thank jorge1 for introducing me to John. I am very fortunate to know a number of guys who've hunted Africa and have been very willing to share their experience (good & bad) and their accumulated wisdom with me. This trip will be very much the culmination of many, many hours of dreaming and scheming and sharing of heart's desires with fellow hunters.

Amigo, this will not only be my first, but may be my only time hunting in Africa. I'll be 60 when the hunt plans come to fruition, and if there's anything my profession has taught me, it's to be serious about the numbers... and 60 is on the wrong side of middle-age, if you follow me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a pessimist. I'm just sayin'... if this is not only my first, but my last hunt in Africa, I want it to be as good as it gets.

You'll have a great trip. John Sharp has a great reputation as a PH. You'll never regret going. A 375 Ruger is a great choice, and a 30-06 is a great second rifle.

Your plan is about as good as it gets. John is a legend. We stayed at the same hotel for the Dallas convention and was able to visit with him.

Yes, I have, actually. I bought a Ruger M77 African in 375 Ruger 2 years ago. I've killed a bison cow only with it so far... it shoots well for me. It has punch a lot of holes in paper besides that bison.
Dunno yet what I'll take for my "light" rifle, if I take one. The 375 might do for everything, as all I really want is my buff, a kudu, and an eland... anything else will be gravy, so to speak. If I take a second rifle it will likely be a 30-06 Model 70, or perhaps my BLR in 358 Win. I have been on two plains games hunts and as best as I can remember the only thing I didn't use a 375 H&H for was Springbok. I am hoping to get back for my 60th for Cape Buffalo. I will have the air miles now I just need the cash.
