I have three ingots that weight 80 lbs+, they have been in the garage for over 20 years. They look like lead but if you hit it with a hammer it has a ring to it. Your finger nail has a hard time making a mark in it.

I would like to get into bullet casting the only mold I have now is for .54 caliber maxi-ball. With everthing I need to start casting I just cannot afford to buy a hardness tester.

If I sent someone a cast 54 caliber bullet would they test and PM me the hardness.

Thanks

Over on Cast Boolits they have a advertiser that does lead analysis for around $25 if I remember correctly. If it's hard to scratch it's probably too hard for ML. You'd be better off trading some of your hard stuff fo some pure. Cast Boolits is a fantastic source for anything cast-related. You can spend hours there reading if you're interested in casting. I have a Lee hardness tester that would get you ball-park but it sounds like what you have is a bit stiff.

if you hit it and it rings it's harder than WW alloy. Probably linotype or close to it.

I'd really not worry about the exact hardness.

I'd look to trade it to someone for pure lead for a 1 lb to 1 lb ratio. Probably just each pay shipping and you'll be good to go.

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

ship in a heavily fortified med flat rate box. You can ship up to 70lbs in it. smile

Yeah, the USPS guys and gals LOVE us boolit casters! My local guy cringes every time I walk in with MFRBs - but he lights up if I can toss them on the counter with one hand! grin

When I told a non-shooting buddy that I had just taken delivery of 50# of WW ingots from California, he looked at me like I had two heads! Such is life in our world!

I made a mold the same size as a small flat rate box to ship some lead to a friend in Alaska. My dad got from hospital X-Ray rooms. The lead weighed 15 lbs.,The girl at the counter almost broke her finger trying to put it on the scale.
