What's it worth?

If, on a HVA action, probably a Model 1640, the tariff for a really nice one here in Canada,will be about $800.00.

For the models called "50" and "51" in the USA, on FN actions, the price is about the same, a truly MINT one might bring $900.00-1K.

There WERE some built on Oberndorf actions bought before WWII and while these are often a bit ragged, I would pay $1K to well over that sum for a VERY choice specimen.

Then, there are scads of Mod.96s in the old Bock chambering and with some moderation in handloading, these can be one FINE "peep" sight rifles and run about $250-$450. here.

If, the one you are considering IS an Oberndorf, with the Mauser crest on the reciever ring, NO mods, NO pitting and most original factory finish plus pristine bore, BUY IT, NOW!

You will NEVER find a better big game rifle for most hunting.

This is a photo of the front ring. There is no SN on the receiver, but there is a Sn 99XXX on the barrel on the left side. The stock is unremarkable. Birch?

Could well be, seems I recall the 96 has a slightly smaller receiver ring? The third lug as I mentioned will tell for sure and if it is a FN, it is a very fine rifle....the stock can be replaced.

That's an FN98 action, not Mod. 94-96.

Notice the ring diameters, the Mod. 94-96 actions were small ring Mausers.

I bought the same rifle, on a commercial FN in the beautiful beechwood stock with smooth forend and checkered pistol grip, in mint condition and no D&T for $500 about six years ago and thought I got a pretty good deal. I believe yours is as well.

Sorry, I stand corrected as I was going by the photos provided and I could not be certain from what I saw there. In any event, since you are now certain that it IS the FN, which, as I first posted, can always be told by the presence of a third lug at the root of the bolt handle, you are lucky.

In the kind of condition that "jgrabow" shows, these are among the most desirable hunting rifles in 9,3x62 that can be found. I tend to think that most are "H" ring, rather than the original Mauser "C" ring design, but, even with that, they are FINE actions and excellent barrels.

I had one in .270 Win. and a HVA 4100 in .270 with it, but, since I had 3 other .270s,I sold them. They have perhaps the nicest barrel contour of any commercial sporter and are known for accuracy.

Price.....I think the above figures are quite reasonable, based on what I see here in Canada.

I'd say $650 is fair, neither a great deal or a steal. I had one of the same customized with McMillan, 4x Leupold, coating, etc. And can't imagine a more perfect go anywhere, hunt anything rifle.

Someone asked about scoping the pre WWII Swedish FN98 Mauser. The bolt handle would need to be modified. The bolt on the left is from the pre WWII Swedish FN98 Mauser and the bolt on the right is from a post WWII Swedish FN98 Mauser.
