Why does the Speer Manual list the load data for the Deep Curl bullets with less powder and velocity as their other bullets?

Because they're a different shape and hardness than their cup-and-core bullets?

And they have different type of jacket electrochemically bonded to the core. The .243 bullets also have a boron nitride coating which also may effect the pressure generated. I figure if Speer went to the trouble of developing specific loading data for these bullets, it would be prudent to follow their recommendations.

I've only worked with two of these - the 150 gr. .270 bullet and the 160 gr. 7mm. I know nothing about the bonding method or any coating, but the bullets are a bit oversize. Since we don't know how little or how much the diameter affects pressure, recommended Speer data is probably best. Or, proceed very cautiously. My limited experience indicates the Deep Curls' are quite accurate.

Has anyone loaded the 180 gr. Deep Curl, .300 Win. mag., using other loading data rather than the factory data ? If so, care to share the load and performance ?
Thanks,
Jim

I've loaded a few Deep Curls in my 300 Win. Mag.72.5grs of Reloader-17 with the 180gr DC gave me 1/2" group @ 3215fps.I also shot some 165gr DC with the same load,my notes don't show group size, but I noted excellent @ 3259fps.

Doesn't seem to be much interest in the Deep Curl; not sure if it's the limited data or what.

In spite of the seeming lack of interest, good luck finding some!
I have 3 boxes of the 6mm Deep Shok 90 gr bullets. After loading some, I can see why Speer never released them through retail channels. So far, not very consistently accurate. Will keep trying. I also have a box of the 90 gr Deep Curls. Haven't tried them yet, hope they are more consistent than the Deep Shoks.

My experience: bought some 257, 120gr. Most accurate bullet I ever tried in my fav 257r. Tried it in a couple of other 257s...same results

Then tried some 150gr in my old Browning Safari 270. 1st group was 3 shots touching.

Beginning to wonder if these bullets are magic. Only problem is finding some more.

My son loaded and shot some 90 gr. DCs in his 243 last deer season. Excellent accuracy and performance. I've wondered if Speer is having trouble with manufacture since they seem to be unavailable and the product line is not expanding. I would love to try some 140 gr. Deep Curls in my 7mm-08.

I called their help line a month or so ago. Was told that they just can't keep up with demand. Guess they're like everyone else in the gun/ammo business.

I haven't tried the Deep Curls yet but have used other Speer bullets in the past. All have been extremely accurate and reliable. My favorites have been Hot Cor Mag Tips. I have used these in 150,180 and 200 gr .30 cal in my '06 and they have flattened game like the hammer of Thor. The 200's are a favorite Black Bear load of mine. Speer has always been a smaller company and when they get a product that takes off or a sudden increase in demand they seem to be surprised and need to catch up. I believe the TBBC that they made had a similar load data issue in that it ran a little slower and created higher pressure quicker. Speer is on top of their load data and very thorough.

I've been shooting them for about a year....120 gr 257 Roberts. Crazy accurate. I just returned from a south Texas hog hunt where I killed 3 +200 lb hogs, 1 Javelina, 1 coyote with them. The hogs were big tough boars but they seem to hit very hard and put stuff down like the hand of God. I recovered one slug....it weighed 100.3 grains for about a 83% weight retention. Here's a pic....

There seems to be a strong demand for them. I've been waiting two months for my order from Midway. They were originally supposed to arrive a week ago. A check of the status shows they are still backordered with no anticipated shipping date.

It has been hard to find them locally or in stock on line.

Mid South has a few in .243, I just ordered some last Thursday.

I did not know they were coated. Any draw backs like with other bullet coatings?

I have a old tang saftey M77 with a hart barrel that will not shoot anything over 95 gr well. Went to the sgk 85's and it dialed in to moa, called it good. Killed a nice running 8pt drt. Hope these hornady deep curl will group and kill as well as the sgk.
