I was curious what kind of accuracy you were getting with the Ruger American in 243?

Looks like they have a compact version this year. 12.5 LOP with and 18 inch barrel. Might be a decent option for a inexpensive youth rifle.

I just ordered one from my dealer, the compact model.
Now the waiting game begins.

Shot group on left first. Adjusted (too much) and shot group on right.

They are also offering the 22/250 and 7mm/08, though not in the compact.

I could live with that. Thinking about one for my daughter. I'm not sure I am really excited about it but they have grown on me a little. I might have to try the compact version. Does the safety lock the bolt when it's on safe?

Shot 100 grain hornady custom in about 6 inch groups at 100 yards, tried the 95 grain fusions and it shot barely under an inch with 5 shots. Went back to the hornadys again and back to about 6 inches. Federal Fusion it is for mine.

Did they give you an approximate time frame?

They are also offering the 22/250

1 in 10" twist.

I've come to the conclusion it's a conspiracy - "they" (whoever they are), don't want .22's used for deer hunting. At least not with some of best bullets that could be used in that caliber.

I shot a buddies this weekend with 100gr Corlokt and 100gr Fusion factory loads. The Remington loads averaged 1.25" groups while the fusions were averaged .75" with the best group was just over .5". Very impressive for what he has into it and no load development.

First 5 shots I fired from mine were from an old partial box of 100gr Power Points: went into less than 1". Next group was a randomly selected reload using some 90gr Speer Deep Shocks. Also less than 1". Load development complete.

I'm with Mako, the 22-250 in 1/10 twist is interesting in a good way!

I shot mine today with the fusions. Two shots were almost in the same hole and when I was setting up for a third shot my heavy glove pulled the trigger a bit much and it was about an inch higher than the others. This was at 100 yards with the scope set on 3x. I've shot several groups less than an inch with mine. I think It will get the Krylon treatment this summer.

I shot mine a little more today too. I started playing with the 105 A-Max to see what they'd do. They kissed at 2.775". I backed them off .010" and checked a few different charges for pressure.

They still had some room in the mag box.

[Linked Image]

Velocity was a little higher than I expected, but they didn't show any signs of pressure.

Shot a couple of three shot groups at 100. First was low and to the left, adjusted and shot this group.

I plan on trying more at 2-300 tomorrow. Need to load a few more tonight.

They worked well. I didn't shoot paper, but I busted some old pumpkins at 300.

Things change fast around here. Sadly, the RAR went down the road. I found something more to my liking. Last week was a good one here. I added a 700 Mountain Guide SS in 7-08 and a 700 ADL in 243. I'm thinking the ADL will be my next project gun. I'm not sure if it had ever been fired -- no evidence at all on the bolt face. It has the old trigger too.

Nothing wrong with the RAR though. I'd buy another (and probably will someday) when the itch arises.

Two new toys...
