Following your D&D .275 both here and on other forums but have to say that when you indicate that you carry the scope for when you may not be able to get within 100 yds for open sight use, I have to say that 100 yds is not necessarily a barrier to their use. As posted elsewhere, my own 7x57 has a bolt mounted aperture (also with a scope carried in a German styled leather bag) and I have sucessfully taken goat out to 185 yds so far and for any of the deer-sheep species I wouldn't put the scope on if I could get within 200 yds.

This sized animal well within a 200yds capability with the bolt mounted aperture with this being one of four taken on the move from the initial undisturbed shot at 145 yds out to the last one taken at 185yds and on the move after the first shot.

This was with the scope attached whilke the aperture stem was being altered - that is shortened so I could mount the scope a bit lower

That's going to be a beautiful rifle Axel. I can't wait for the next series of photos.

I also think its a lovely rifle. But not authentic. I would have the thumb cut added.

Authentic???????

There were various Oberndorf rifles/actions made without the thumb recess, itself largely a military modification. So, a newly manufactured Pattern 98 action or a Brno 21/22, ZG-47 or early FN-C ring action IS most definitely ...authentic....

I own various and many specimens of the above, except the new Mauser and no FNs at present and I have no issues with their "lack" of authenticity, or, with customizing them to work as well as possible in BC hunting conditions.

This, reminds me of spring, 2006, when I bought my 1937 Obie Type B in 9.3x62 and some moaned when I had EAW mounts installed and a modern scope mounted. It is a HUNTING rifle, used but in very nice shape and is NOT some sort of "toy" to be kept in a safe and taken out for admiration over cigars and cognac.....neither, it seems, will this D&D rifle meet that fate.

Each to his own, I prefer scopes and irons as the backup.

Hey Kutenay:

Your point is well taken, and I should have extended my definition to state "authentic in the tradition of the model 98 military mauser such as shown in the example photos".

Well the action is brand new and not authentic as such, but its a brand new FZH left-hand action from germany and they do solid work.

This rifle will be open sights mostly and with the scope and H&H side mount carried in a leather bag by the hip smile

Holland & Holland sidemount finished:
Kahles KXi 3.5-10x50 with light on top.

Hi Alex,

You will find attached some photos of the completed H&H style scope mount for the Kahles scope.
It was quite a challenge as we have to make all parts from scratch...
The scope is perfectly aligned and the mount shut and bolt like a vault.
The next stage being the wood work, I need to know your definitive choice about the stock design.
What do you prefer: beaded cheekpiece or like original Rigby without cheekpiece ?
How about the grip: rounded Rigby style or capped pistol grip ?
For the buttplate thats Ok for a slim English red soft pad.
I wait for your comments asap.

Best regards.

The pictured rifle with the (Holland and Holland side mounts) is a bit confusing since one end of the mount is on the receiver. I have not seen an example of the Rigby side mount that is present on my 1969 .375 H&H Rigby. It was custom ordered by the original purchaser and closely resembles the Griffin and Howe double lever side mount. It is the best solution for an iron sighted gun with quick change to a scope. Is such a Rigby mount so scarce that we haven't seen such a thing?

There are very few who constantly impress me when it comes to longarms, Dorleac & Dorleac head that small list.

Old thread I know but this companies work bears remarking upon.

I'm with you Jstuart, I took a look at buying a rifle from them - bit of a process to get into the states. Just beautiful rifles.

Such examples are around.

The .275 bore Rigby that Ruark purchased and was given to the Selbys, had a series of holes drilled in the left wall
that seem to correspond with the type of uncommonly seen side mount you are referring to...suggesting Mr.Bell
at some point had such a scope mount.

My understanding is the rifle did not have a scope and mount when it was gifted to the Selby family and that Ruark
became the next owner upon Mrs Bell putting the rifle (from the estate of her late husband) up for sale through
Westley Richards.

The very different scope mount one sees in images of that rifle, was fitted by Robert Triebel in Nairobi.
