Saw a sign in town today.

Somebody is offering to buy used test strips and the sign says they pay $10/100..

shocked shocked

Are they after the Gold/Copper in those strips or what.?

Anybody heard of this.?

I hadn't either. My dad checks his often and goes thru a Bunch of those things.

He uses the Accu-Strips. I took one out and looked at it. Sure looks like the contacts are Gold,..but I sure didn't think there was enough to salvage.

Took one apart,..sure looks like Gold.

[Linked Image]

It had some sort of adhesive on it. Took a little bit of Acetone to it on a paper towel and after a few quick swipes, it had eaten thru the Gold.

So if it is Gold,..its thickness is probably measured in atoms... eek

Vampires seeking the blood?

Maybe it's like Tic Tac candy strips.

Well, you piqued my interest. I did a quick google search and found that folks really are recovering gold from the test strips.

A thread on it from a gold refining forum.

And from Diabetes Mine.

An article on Yahoo Voices.

Not sure. Wasn't close enough to read any fine print that was on the sign. Probably unused or expired since the other would be HAZMAT....

Damn things cost $1 each new, checking your blood sugar several times a day adds up quick.

These.

Walmart Prime test strips

You can order them and get free shipping if you buy enough and never have to go to walmart either.

I also buy my insulin there. For a long time they had reli-on branded Humulin-N insulin which still had the Eli-Lily packaging on the inside of the box for $24.88 compared to $70-80 elsewhere. Now they switched to Novalin brand Humulin-N and it's still $24.88 over the counter.

Yeah the tester for that kind is a little better tester than the other one they carry. It has a memory and does 14 and 30 day averaging where the one for the slightly more expensive strips doesn't do anything but check blood sugar.

I think the tester for these is $12.

thanks so much. this really will help. i have been either not testing often enough due to cost or paying too much, either way, for a while.

I use Bayer Contours. High dollar and highly erratic. Two tests with new strips taken minutes apart from the same drip can be 20 points different -- usually lower the second time.

WTF!

I don't think you can get strips that will test closer than 20 in back to back test. The cheap walmart ones are more repeatable the lower your sugar but the higher they get the further apart they normally are. Doesn't really matter to me, the difference between 200 and 220 just means it is still high.

Beeen doing it for 37 years and that has been my experience. To me I only need to know if it is normal, high or really high. Really only need to know if it's normaly or slightly high. If it's low I know already and if it's higher than slightly high I know that as well.

Of course my friend works in an ER and people come in often with blood sugar levels above 400, 600 or even 800 and don't know it. I don't know if my blood sugar has been above 400 in 37 years and I would know it well before it got halfway there.

My doctor had me get one of those testers. I am type two. Its been a year. I don't know why she had me get one but she did and then she decided I didn't need to be checking blood sugar so I don't get the strips anymore. Waste of my insurance co money. My last A1c was 6.4. And I am only taking mediformin. She had me on glybudride too but I been off of it since last August, my blood sugar was going way to low. My doctor says that an A1c is a better indicator. And she is happy with my control numbers. I get my pills from Walmart 4 bucks. She orders blood work almost every time I go in. But I guess its the drill for the condition.

gmsemel it may not always be that simple. the disease a lot of the time "adjusts" to the meds and your body will too. best thing ever is exercise, low carb diet, and lose weight.
