I recently found a 581 but the trigger isn't what I expected. It's "ok", but not great. It doesn't break as cleanly as I'd like and seems a bit heavy. I've stoned the trigger and sear on a couple different 22's with good luck. The trigger housing on the 581 looks like a closed system though. I'm wondering if it's going to be a PITA to screw with or not.

Yes, I did. Removed it and threw it away. Ordered a Timney from Brownells for a Rem 788. Needed abit of inletting for the safety but worked out fine.

Did it make a difference in the groups you could shoot with the rifle? Everyone I listen to said these 581 would shoot lights out. I've tried this one with 5 different loads I have on hand, and so far, not so much. I've got 2 other 22s that will out shoot it easy. I'm hoping it's the trigger though.

It was not my rifle. Belonged to a friend. After changing triggers he told me that the groups greatly improved. I think the original trigger pull was around 6 pounds.

When i purchased my 581 in the 70's i did this and the rifle has one of the best trigger on any of my 22. The 581 has one spring that works both the trigger and sears spring. I took out the spring and cut it into two equal length , then i drilled as small hole through the trigger housing and installed a pin in the hole making two separate spring instead of one and it lighted the trigger pull to a crisp pull of around 2.5 pound . This rifle has never failed to fire or function perfect and still does today. A very simple fix for the 581 trigger. You can adjust the pull weight by removing a coil from the trigger spring just don't over do it unless you have a spare spring to work with .

Even with a 6 lb trigger, my 580 shoots 1/2" at 50 easily with SKjagd Standard Plus. It also shoots some Wolf and CCI Green Tag really well.

I have a 581 that had a 6 lb trigger took it to a gunsmith in Franklin County PA. It now has about a 2.5 lb tiger. The trigger job was less than the cost of a new trigger. There was nothing wrong with the orginal Remington just needed adjustment.

yes, except i didn't need the adjustment screws, it worked just fine without them

yeah that's a 788 trigger diagram but it's basically the same trigger I'm told. The set screws are optional IMO. I think I'm going to order one of the aftermarket spring kits off fleabay and go from there.
