Here we go people....

We're gonna set this up differently than the monthly challenges we did last summer. There won't be one winner of the 24HRCFPC. It's a club that you shoot your way into. It's only available to the most awesomest shooters around. It's tough, but being a Pistolero ain't easy.

Some of these might be tougher than others, depending on what your pistol background is. But that's the idea, if you can't do the hostage shots, post up your misses and track your progress. The idea is that this won't be a one shot wonder thread for the month, but will keep going as new folks try it and people get better.

Rules of Engagement
1) If you successfully complete the 24HRCFPC you will earn eternal Campfire bragging rights and can add "Campfire Pistolero" to your signature line.

2) Any pistol is allowed, no scopes / red dots allowed. If you choose to shoot it with a snubnose .38 or a flintlock, more power to ya.

3) The target will be 6" x 11 1/2". You can fold 2 1/2" of the edge of a sheet of paper under and use that. The hostage target will be available by email. PM me your email addy and I'll get it sent to you.

4) All shots must be IN THE TARGET. Shots that break the edge are misses.

5) Shoot each stage and post pics of your target here. Video is desirable, aviators are preferred, clothing is optional.

The 24HRCFPC will be divided into three categories...speed, accuracy and stress.

All shots can be made from a ready position, since a lot of ranges won't let you draw from the holster.

The close range speed challenge is a modified version of Paul Howe's standards to graduate from his pistol instructor course. Shoot this stage from 7 yards.
1) 1 shot from the ready in 1.25 seconds
2) 2 shots from the ready in 1.75 seconds
3) 5 shots from the ready in 3 seconds
4) 2 shots each on two targets from the ready in 3.5 seconds
5) 4 shots weak hand only from the ready in 4 seconds
6) 2 shots / reload / 2 shots from the ready in 5 seconds
***You do not have to retain your magazine. Drop one mag, insert another, fire.
***Revolver shooters have to reload. Better use a speed loader.

The long range stage uses a torso sized target. If you don't have a printed target to use, measure out an 18" x 24" rectangle.
1) 6 shots at 50 yards in 1 minute.
-5 of the 6 shots must hit to pass.
2) 6 shots at 25 yards in 1 minute.
-All 6 shots must hit to pass.

I'll email the hostage target to y'all.
Shoot it from 5 yards.
1 shot in 2.5 seconds.
Repeat this five times.
All shots have to hit to pass.

I've got the target scanned and will start emailing it out.

If anyone can figure out how to attach a PDF here so people can download it, please do.

This is what it looks like. For scoring...
1) Anything in the green is a hit. The bullet can break the line on this stage only. Be honest about the scoring or you'll catch crap when you post the pic for sure and for certain. More than half a bullet on the hostage would just be mean, and we're not gonna count it.

2) The green dots show the box that we should really be hitting. It's not required for the competition and the dots aren't on the target I'm emailing. I just put them on here as a kind of learning tool.

I'll get the target out to everyone who's emailed me. I've gotta pick one out and scan it first.

Sorry for the delay on the COF, I got pulled away for a bit.

I saved two posts at the top so I could edit with any clarifications that are needed. Lemme know I there's any questions.

And if you don't have a shot timer...

Surefire has a free shot timer app that works pretty good. It's free. You can find it by searching "Surefire".

That sounds fun, if I can get away I'd like to do it. Unfortunately right now I'm coaching soccer, so my nights and weekends are spoken for. Still, I'd like to break out the ole-PACT (and mine is O L D ! !) and have some fun.

Bluedreaux,

Please clarify "ready"

Arms extended, pistol lowered out of line of sight, or elbows bent, pistol in toward the body, or other?

I'll take a pic tonight and post it so we're all on the same page.

Basically, it's a "compressed ready" or "high ready". Pistol pulled against basically the bottom of the sternum, pointed downrange, elbows bent and against the sides of your body.

Was going to ask the same question. Since I don't got no training, I'm ignernt of lots of shooting terms.

Big thanks to Bluedreaux for coming up with this idea.

I ran out to the range today as the weather was nice and I felt like shooting. This 310 has been begging for some trigger time so I thought I'd give it a go.
[Linked Image]

Have not shot in an IDPA match in some time, and never with a revolver so this was a lot of fun for me.

1st stage I did in .99

2nd stage I did in 1.53

3rd stage I knew would be tough. I did it in 3.0 but that was my 3rd attempt.

4th stage I did in a 2.86 right out of the gate and that felt pretty good.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

5th stage was an abortion and was done in 4.44

6th stage made 'flave realize he needs work with moon clips...

25yd line was fun and I did the 6 in 13 seconds and shot it again for fun and that was in 16 seconds
[Linked Image]

50yd line was cake but Mr. SKS and his girl arrived and I didn't take time to snap any pics of that target.

Good schit all around. And I KNEW 5 shots in 3 seconds would be tough. grin

Good schit. Use a timer! Get a buddy to shoot it with. I'll be back out after I print off the good guy/bad guy target. Don't forget the pasties...

Don't forget the aviators...

Just so we're all on the same page. It doesn't get much faster than this for a ready position.

1) averaged 0.91 to 1.15 sec
2) 1.61 was the best, 2 sec was average though
3) 4.0 is apparently where I live - 3.89 was tops, 4.43 worst
4) this I got a 3.43 tops, again, 4 seconds is where I'm at
5) no comment
6) ahem, 9 seconds would be generous

'll email the hostage target to y'all.
Shoot it from 5 yards.
1 shot in 2.5 seconds.
Repeat this five times.
All shots have to hit to pass.

I forgot to print this out before leaving the house but approximated it in the last pic. four tries, 1st try not from ready (5.67 sec), last three tries from ready, <10 sec each

so....#3,5,6 own me right now eek

Red dots and scopes are strictly forbidden because I'm worried their gayness might be contagious, but I've been asked about laser grips. I'll vote to allow laser grips since they are commonly used on regular defensive pistols.

Pending approval from the judge.

Absolutely. I'm a HUGE fan of ridicule.

Also, doesn't hurt to post the particulars of ones load. (From the firearm, sickos)

Turned out to not be a nice day so I spent it with the family. It was 80* and sunny at home. 3 hours north at Six Flags it was 47*, windy and sprinkling rain on us.

But we managed. [Linked Image]

Travis, we've been asked for a rule clarification...

50 yard shots, what shooting positions are allowed?

Standing unsupported only?

Barricades allowed @ the fitty, but no the 25.

I think that's fair.

It's not about regulations. It's about using a measurable standard so that you can identify deficiencies and track your progress.

But that's not for everybody either.

Like I said, you guys have fun. Seriously.

Ill do the same and measure my ability and progress may own way. Clay birds work for me and I can see hits on them way past where I can see hits on paper. Moreover, when I miss I see dirt fly on the berm. Instant feedback aint bad

Observations...

This weekend I put 42 shooters through this couse of fire. Each one was timed but not told what the time limits were...just hit the target as fast as possible. I didn't keep exact records but the following are the approximate percentages/numbers...

1) Only 4-5 shooters made the 1.25 second limit and hit the target. Most shooters took 1.4-1.75 seconds for a successful hit.

2) About 10-12 shooters made the two shots in 1.75 seconds

3) About 14-16 made the 5 shots in 3 seconds

4) Almost 14-16 made the two shots per target in 3.5 seconds...most were in the 4-6 second range

5) Only 3-4 made the time and all the hits with the support hand only

6) No one made the 2-tactical reload-2 in 5 seconds. A few came close (I just realized I misread the instructions. I told them the magazine had to be retained...my mistake. Knowing these shooters I would say only about 5 out of the 40+ can do a 2-speedload-2 and get all their hits at 7 yards)

Long Range 25 yards: NO ONE MISSED a round and all finished under 30 seconds except for two shooters who just shot real slow because they could...and they still finished in 40 seconds)

Long Range 50 yards: As we were shooting indoors and had a 25 yard limit a standard piece of typing paper was used, this is less than 1/2 the size of the standard target at 1/2 the distance. 30+ of the shooters made all their hits. Only 2 shooters had 3 hits. The rest had 4-5 hits.

Didn't have the hostage target at the time. My guess would be that 7-10 could make the shot in the time.

I didn't get to shoot the course of fire as I was running the program....I am also beat by the end of the weekend, 11-9-7 hour days on the concrete will do that. Will try and run it next time I shoot with a partner.

Observations:

A standard piece of 8.5x11 sheet of paper would have been simpler and more realistic.

The 25 and 50 targets are WAY too big and times WAY too generous. A more realistic target could have been two pieces of paper forming a 8.5x22" target. Times cut to 20 seconds for 25 yards and 30 for 50 yards. (our shooters have to pass a test of 5 rounds from the holster at 25 yards in 12 seconds to get into the group)

Fun test...Bob

For whatever reason I think the five in 3 seconds is pretty tough. I'm surprised that many did it.

I've had a friend working with me recently on tempo. I've gotten much faster by working on a steady cadence of fire, and speeding up the cadence, than by just shooting "real fast". My fast shooting has gotten much more accurate doing it this way.

It really only matters when you get past about three shots though.

Nice to see you using the course RJM!

I stole a lot of it from Paul Howe and adjusted the times for us mortals. I can pass his standards, but you've got to be on top of your game to do it. It's definitely not something I always KNOW I can do on demand.

I believe his reasoning for a skinnier A Zone is to represent the side view of a bad guy (bad guy turned 90* to you).

Are you in LE or private instruction?

I dunno, I think the 4 shots in 5 seconds with a mag reload (#6) may be the hardest to do in the time.........even with an OS mag release, shooting one handed & with the 2nd mag held ready, that is tough.

If you are shooting something like a Glock or M& P with a standard mag release, that could be really tough.

I agree completely. I was just saying that I was surprised by the number of shooters RJM witnessed the 5 in 3 stage.

A lot of people I know can draw and fire one shot from the holster in 1.5 seconds...repeat shots at that point are usually in the .25 to .40 area...so four more shots adds only 1 to 1.5 seconds.

It was why a lot more shooters made the two shots in 1.75 seoconds than made the one shot in 1.25 seconds...their second shot took a lot less time once the gun was up and going.

Agreed...........but the mag drop & re-insertion & the drop of the slide is where the time comes in.

The actual shooting time is not an issue, especially from the ready position.

I looked and that mag change stage is one that I didn't adjust the time on. We might need to adjust the time on it if the judge seems necessary.

I'm gonna really try and get to the range tomorrow afternoon.

I hit the hills today, ran through most of it (the 'long range' stuff will be easy) to get a feel.
I was using my Security-Six with mid-power LSWCs.
I've only shot weak-hand once before, in our last 24 contest. I'll have to practice a little. I could make the time OK, but my shots were stringing just left off the paper.
I need to practice for the hostage target, also. I nicked one guy's cheekbone, blasted through the other's eye socket edge, and gave one a sore shoulder. Those were 3, 4, & 5 after two perfect centers, so maybe I got cocky! But I was well within time, so I should be able to put that one together easily.
So, I'll be able to do everything but the reload stage. I haven't practiced that skill, either. I tried shooting with a pair of cartridges in my left hand, but I didn't come close to closing the cylinder before time expired. Then I tried it with a Sig 9, kept trying to (unnecessarily) pull out the mag.
I can't guarantee to myself that I'll pass that one ever.

Overall, fun.
But I'm slower than I was when I was in my practicing prime!

Do we have to run the whole deal through successfully, or are we allowed to patch together successful pieces?

macrabbit,

You can do the course in stages.

Bonus points for using a Security Six...

I've got an idea-- take 10 seconds from the 50-yd stage and add them to the reload stage. The total time will be equal, everyone will be happy, and no one the wiser.

10 seconds!?!?!?!? You'd better be able to relaid an extra three times....

It's up to Deflave. I've recorded changing it to 5 seconds. That'll give you 1.75 for each two shots and 1.5 seconds for a reload.

Printing up the hostage target now, confirm on the 25 and 50 yard stages what positions are acceptable?

25 yards is standing unsupported.

At 50 yards we can use barricades for support. No bench resting, just use something to simulate cover and also use it for support.

I just can't slip anything past you, can I?

My print-out of the course was in 5. Had it been listed even faster originally? Yeek!

I'll have to design a forearm-mounted magazine holder, so I can just slam a pistol down against an upright magazine. And maybe fiddle with the gun so that inserting a mag drops the slide.
Or maybe have an assistant on each side of me, one to press the mag release, one to slide in a new mag, the first to drop slide-- bip-schlunk-whack -- while I maintain stance and aim.

Well I can't figure out how to get the video loaded.

I passed everything but the weak hand shots. Couldn't get that below 4.5 seconds. Did the reload in 4.1. Hostage shots were all below 1.5 seconds.

Anybody know how to link a video from photobucket without allowing access to my whole account?

No.

Just make youtube account and use that.

Winner is announced. Actual field shooting, multi gun, timed and calculated. Paper doesn't count as much as flesh and bone...

Back in the day when I was an Embassy Marine, the standard we trained to was 2 shots in 2 seconds, from a snapped holster. Distance 3 yards.

We had other stages at 3, 7, 15, and 25 yards. Model 19 Smith & Wesson, all DA of course.

After my embassy tours I taught at Quantico for a couple years, training Marines for Embassy Duty. It always amazed me how well training works. We practiced the draw, and dry fired more times than you can imagine, before going to the range. Some students had bloody blisters on their trigger fingers, just from the dry firing. But it sure did instill muscle memory.

At my old department I passed the qual course with my eyes closed, literally. That says a lot about the course, but also about training.

I'd check my natural point of aim, close my eyes, and shoot the course from the holster. I was shooting a lot then, and it was all muscle memory.

Damn, used the underwood ammo too, that stuff is like gold right now, the poor guy cannot even get components to load. I dont think he has a single round in stock for anything.

I went out to shoot for score today. Put the first shot of the deal on paper. Turned to the falling plates to get the feel of the next time amount. Shot a pair. Shot another pair but found it difficult to pick up the front sight. Spent the next half hour trying to pick up the front sight but I couldn't find it anywhere in the leaves and grass-- it'd popped out of the dovetail!
I guess it'll be another little while until I become a Campfire Pistolero...

Dang that sucks. I've shot quite a bit with no rear sight, but the front one is a bit more important.

I'm 7/9ths of the way there (pending judges' decision, of course).

It was a quarter mile to the 50-yd range, and I was fatigued from the rest of the shooting, so I put off that stage to another day.
And I didn't even try the reload. That'll be an afternoon session all by itself, working up the skill set.

1 shot in 1.25 was easy, got it first try (that bottom tear is where the staple was):

[Linked Image]

I don't recall my difficulty with 2 in 1.75, speed or target, but it took me three tries to get:

[Linked Image]

5 in 3 challenged me.
25 years ago, when I was participating in local competitions, I got my first shot, from hands at the ears with a draw, below 1.2 seconds. I've slowed down!
But on my sixth attempt today:

[Linked Image]

2 on 2 in 3.5 worked right away, though the grouping could have been better:
[Linked Image]

4 in 4, weak hand-- hoo!
The only time I ever use my left hand is to hit my turn signal.
I shot this competition with my 1911 using 185-gr JHPs at 1100 fps, so it's got quite a pop. My left arm muscles haven't a clue how to resist recoil, nor how to snap back on point.
I blew through at least half a box of ammo working my way down in time. My early tries had the first shot over 1.5 seconds and each subsequent at about 1. That ain't gonna win!
Had a few aborted runs; I could tell that the first shot was eating up way too much time, so didn't bother finishing.
But I finally got one done, and the group was a big surprise:
[Linked Image]

6 at 25 in 60 was no problem; certainly not for time (though I was surprised to see that I used up almost half):
[Linked Image]

I began the Ingwe stage in my 'combat stance'. My first shot got a hostage in his cheekbone; and then the timer beeped 10 minutes later (or so it seemed).
Therefore I knew that I had plenty of time.
So I put up a new target and ran the stage using my 'accuracy mode' isosceles stance:
[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/macrabbit/Pistolero%20Challenge/IMGP5909_zpsfbf65f53.jpg[/img]
Shots 1, 3, and 4 are in there together on the right. Don't know what happened with 5- I must have rushed it.

It was a fun afternoon, even if I have lost a step or two.
And even though I couldn't find that popped front sight, this search using a strong magnet.

Two more stages to go. Stay tuned...

I'm up to 8/9ths of the way through-
[Linked Image]

6 shots at 50 yds, offhand. 44.87 seconds. .45ACP
I got the required 5 out of 6 on the plate. I've no doubt the 6th would have printed on the 18x24 target allowed.

Still got that dang reload to do...

I did it!!!!
Got it on my 38th attempt (and with only 5 rounds left to play with):

[Linked Image]

4.75 seconds.

That little stage used up a lot of ammo, a lot of paper, a lot of folding (6"!!), a lot of staples, and a lot of frustration.

BlueBoss, you did the reload stage in 4.1. Where was your spare mag?

I don't have a speed pouch, and I'm not sure I want to go all the way to my waist anyway. (Didn't occur to me until later to just tuck the magazine inside my belt; but again, that's a long way to reach.)
For my first dozen or so attempts (until I ran out of paper and quit for the day) I held my mag in my support hand. That stole a lot of 'support' from that hand; it just wasn't making it, and I was doubting that the stage was possible for me.
The next day, more paper in hand, my devious thinking cap gave me something new: I moved my watch to my wright wrist, loosened the band, and slipped the magazine underneath (ruined two attempts with fall-outs).
It worked, but it was 'playing to the game' -not how I might carry a spare in real life.

"You do as you trained" showed up. I'm more a hunter and a shooter rather than a 'defensive reactor', so I don't generally dump my magazines onto the ground when empty. In the hurry of this stage, my left hand automatically reached for the mag. I couldn't stop it, though I was able to adjust the move to a 'swipe-down'.
One of the times that I was successful in controlling that naughty hand, the mag didn't drop- it hung up about an inch out. So I think I went back to letting my left swipe it out.

I did my reload off my belt. That's what I had in mind when I wrote it, but however you normally carry a reload would work too.

Hello and thank you for contacting us at the 24HRCFPC. I apologize for my partner's tardiness in responding to your inquiry, and I apologize for his retardiness in general.

In his absence I have determined that according to my faint remembrance of the rules and my blind trust that you actually passed each of the challenges (since I haven't bothered to actually go back and look at any of it) you HAVE earned the right to be named a 24HourCampfire Pistolero.

Congratulations on your feat of amazing amazingness!!! I would recommend that you immediately begin carrying a club with you to protect yourself from the scores of swooning hotties that will inevitably hear of your success and seek you out as a potential baby daddy.

Please contact RickBin for your complimentary pair of aviators and your $10,000 prize.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
My mommy will be sooo proud.

No club needed, thanks. Even if I had a million bucks peeking out of every pocket of my safari jacket, they'd still turn away.

Rick mentioned that I had to fill out form 3065, sections 22-71, to claim my prize. Anyone know where I can find that form?

I figure anyone can do it, (even you), if he puts in the time and ammo I did.
I shot through (just guessing, after all this time) 200-250 rounds over several days trying to complete all the stages. The toughest, the reload stage, took me 38 attempts.

I don't know why the Campfire hasn't produced a hundred Pistoleros. Heck, we've got 48,000 members (excluding spiders!), and what with the claimed expertise of our internet warriors...

Dunno how I missed this thread last year. Oh, waitaminit, now I remember. I was dealin' with some serious scheit last March/April. Sucked to be me.

Oh, well, better now. I'm gonna try shootin' this thing tomorrow or the next day, if Bluedreaux still has that hostage target kickin' around.

Maybe somebody will bring the course of fire down to the hog hunt in March and we can have a mass pistolero induction.

Me getting awarded Pistolero x2 might get some of you off your butts.

What better way to celebrate the Fourth than by chooting things.
It's been longer than a year since I lost my front sight while preparing for the contest, but I finally got the P226 back in working order.
115 gr. JHP, 1300 fps.

Stage 1;
First attempt;
1.11 seconds.
(I'm amazed and abashed at how long it takes me to get off the first shot, especially from the contest's ready position.)
[Linked Image]

Stage 2;
First attempt;
1.69 sec.
[Linked Image]

Stage 3;
Second attempt (broke the edge with one, the first time);
2.92 sec.
[Linked Image]

Stage 4;
Second attempt (missed the last shot, in 2.37);
3.06 sec.
[Linked Image]

Stage 5;
Fifth attempt, I think;
3.91 sec.
[Linked Image]

Stage 6;
Ninth attempt (that beats the 38 tries with the .45!);
4.99 sec. (that's .01 to spare!)
[Linked Image]

Stage 7;
Fourth attempt, and only five hits!! (I gotta put this gun over a sand bag, find out what's going on or what it's capable of. But all the misses grouped well just left off the paper. I put two pages together, making it 11x16.5". If I'd used the allowed torso target, all would have passed.
[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/macrabbit/Pistolero%20Challenge/IMGP6134_zps43405a14.jpg[/img]

Stage 8;
First attempt;
21.18 sec. on an 8.5x11" sheet (cute pattern (ignore the binder punch holes)).
[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/macrabbit/Pistolero%20Challenge/IMGP6135_zpsa2d13cc8.jpg[/img]

Stage 9;
Sixth attempt; (It only took me 1.5 attempts last time. But I kept missing just left enough to nick Jerry.)
[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/macrabbit/Pistolero%20Challenge/IMGP6136_zps883fb005.jpg[/img]

This is fun, some of it a challenge.
I hope to soon be a three-time winner, and that with a revolver.

Just so we're all on the same page. It doesn't get much faster than this for a ready position.

Actually it does. Extended ready, IE arms straight, with your muzzle pointed at your potential adversaries' feet, is about a quarter of a second faster.

Sorry, that's bullshit. Pushouts are WAAAAY faster than pullups, by at least 0.2 seconds. I've proved it with hundreds of students, using timers. The best ready position is with the muzzle forward, gun close to the chest. It ain't "low ready". Me and my training partners call it "Mo ready".

I'm 7/9ths through with a revolver; but I'd like, Bossmanses, a couple of rulings before I continue.

1) Will you allow an exception of two guns?
My buddy was with me, with his young son, and he wanted to have the kid step up from .22's. But his S&W had been converted to DA-only, not really suitable for a small and weak learner, so I let them use my Security-Six while I shot several Pistolero Contest stages with his Mod. 66.
After they were done, I reclaimed ol' faithful and continued with stages.

2) Will you allow an exception of two ammos?
So far, I've been using 158-gr. LSWC bullets. But the sharp shoulders are hanging up on the reload stage, so I'd like to use something more rounded. (I don't know what I've got in the garage that fits the bill; I might have to shoot full .357 loads instead of the .38 Specials I've been using!)
That change alone won't shave the all of the 1.25 seconds I need to drop, but it'd sure help.

Oh, arbiters of all things PC (Pistolero Contest)...

I'll be out in the hills again soon, would like to know if I may continue this revolver attempt or if I must start over and run it with one gun and one ammo.

macrabbit,

You can do as you wish. You are, after all, a pistolero.

Question -

What are the dimensions of the hostage target. Overall dimensions of the target?

I can copy and paste it into word but don't know the dimensions of the overall size of the target. So that way it can be pretty small or pretty big, just sayin.

If it was previously covered, I apologize, but I didn't want to look through all the thread for the size.

Thanks,
AJD

I'm not one of the true Honchos, but in the interest of exercising my new-found authority:
Print it to fill an 8.5x11 sheet.

You were clearly granted decision making authority!

Thanks!
