I know two people with the Mitsubishi ductless AC systems and they love them.

I have installed a lot of both and others as well.
Mitsubishi is the best, and the most expensive
They all have multi zone systems, both straight cool and heat pumps

I have sold Fujitsu for the past few years. Installed correctly in the right application they work great. They are very efficient, sound level is low, and you can control each zone independently.

I sell both Fujitsu and Mitsubishi and will say the Mitsubishi is better but as said more money. If you are relying on it for heating I would go with the Mitsubishi for sure as it works at much lower temps than other manufactures. If you are in an area that has extremely low temps they even have a base heater that allows them to run well below zero.

So it's my understanding that, though the component cost's are higher than a traditional forced air system, it's about the same as its installation is less labor intensive...???

Coupled with solar it sounds like a dandy system...

They cost 4k vs. a 2k PTAC or VTAC.

are you looking at a cold climate duct less? Are you in Montana, heating zone 6?

Exactly. Doable?

My understanding is the condenser needs to be inside in a utility closet vs. outside.

Is that correct?

Don't think you want to do that. The condenser needs to be outside to work properly. Also need to get above snow load or keep unit clear. Where you are located you need to be more concerned with the heating side of system. Make sure you have system sized properly by someone who knows what they are doing. Also as the temps go really low the heat pump side of the system will lose some of its capacity so here in NH I recommend people have some sort of back up. A wood stove, pellet stove even a small amount of electric heat. The ductless are super efficient but do have a couple small drawbacks I discribed. Again the key is get a contractor you trust and seems knowledgeable. Also they do work best in a open concept situation.

Ha!

This isn't for me... I use hot H2O via a Lochinvar "boiler" with Corbond and Cellulose insulation throughout the house... researching for a client.

I have the Mitsu ductless in a 600sqft one room office with bath. Very efficient and very quiet. About the only bad thing is air can get stale, no outside fresh air- it just recirculates
